Chapter 9 - The Petition for Leo
Claire found the petition while Margaret and Vanessa attended a luncheon.
It was a draft request for emergency guardianship.
The document described Claire as emotionally unstable, paranoid, and unable to care for her newborn.
It claimed Margaret had witnessed Claire neglecting feedings.
It claimed Claire had threatened to disappear with Leo.
None of it was true.
Attached to the draft were photographs Vanessa had taken around the house.
A bottle left in the sink.
Laundry on a chair.
Claire asleep beside the crib.
Ordinary moments had been turned into evidence of neglect.
There was also a written statement bearing the name of a private therapist Claire had never met.
Claire photographed the petition.
Then she noticed the proposed filing date.
It was two days before Daniel’s scheduled homecoming.
Margaret intended to obtain temporary control of Leo before Daniel returned.
Once the order existed, she could tell Daniel the court had already decided Claire was dangerous.
Claire’s hands went cold.
She immediately called the pediatrician and requested copies of every appointment record.
The records showed that Claire had attended each visit, followed every instruction, and contacted the office whenever Leo showed symptoms.
She emailed copies to a new account.
Then she called a legal aid number for military spouses.
Before she could explain everything, Vanessa entered the room.
Claire ended the call.
Vanessa’s eyes moved to the open folder.
“You really should learn to mind your own business.”
“My son is my business.”
“Not if a judge decides otherwise.”
Claire stood.
“You will never take Leo.”
Vanessa smiled, but there was no warmth in it.
“Daniel’s mother has known judges, doctors, and attorneys in this county longer than you’ve been part of this family.”
Claire slipped her phone into her dress pocket.
“Then she should know forging evidence is a crime.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
That night, Margaret announced that a family photographer would arrive the following day.
“We need pictures showing a peaceful household before Daniel comes home,” she said.
