Chapter 13 - The Recording They Forgot
A deputy retrieved Claire’s phone from the cabinet.
The screen showed an active voice recording lasting twenty-three minutes.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“That can’t be used,” she said quickly. “She recorded us without permission.”
The deputy ignored her and stopped the recording.
Downstairs, paramedics worked on Leo.
They gave him oxygen and cleared his airway while another medic examined Claire’s shoulder and checked her pupils.
Daniel remained beside them.
He wanted to hold Claire.
He wanted to confront his mother.
But his son’s oxygen level was dangerously low, and every second mattered.
The recording played quietly from the deputy’s phone.
Claire’s voice: “Leo has a fever. I’m taking him to the hospital.”
Margaret: “You’re not leaving before the photographer comes.”
Then the struggle.
The glass breaking.
Claire crying out.
Vanessa saying, “Put her phone up there.”
Finally, Margaret’s voice came through clearly.
“Lock the door. By the time Daniel arrives, we’ll already have enough evidence to prove she’s unstable.”
No one spoke when the recording ended.
Margaret lifted her chin.
“She manipulated the situation.”
The deputy looked at the bruises on Claire’s arms.
“Did she manipulate those too?”
“I was restraining her for the baby’s safety.”
“By locking a sick newborn in a room?”
Vanessa moved toward the staircase.
The second deputy blocked her.
“You need to stay here.”
“I didn’t lock anything.”
The recording answered from the deputy’s hand.
Vanessa’s own voice said, “I’ll take her phone. You use the key.”
The paramedics placed Leo inside a transport carrier.
“We need to go now.”
Daniel climbed into the ambulance beside his son.
Claire tried to stand.
Pain folded her back toward the floor.
A medic caught her.
“You’re coming too.”
As they carried Claire downstairs, Margaret reached for Daniel’s sleeve.
“Son, listen to me.”
Daniel looked at her hand until she released him.
“You had six weeks to protect them,” he said. “You chose to hurt them instead.”
The ambulance doors closed.
Margaret remained in the driveway between two deputies.
Then one deputy received a message from the trust attorney.
