Chapter 7 - The Story They Sent Daniel
Margaret did not attack Claire that night.
She did something more calculated.
She entered with Vanessa holding a phone camera.
Claire was exhausted, frightened, and clutching a crying baby.
Margaret began speaking in a soft, concerned voice.
“Claire, please give me Leo before you hurt yourself.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You locked yourself in here.”
“Because you tried to take my phone.”
Vanessa moved closer, keeping the camera pointed at Claire.
“You haven’t slept,” she said. “You’re confused.”
Claire understood.
They were creating evidence.
She turned away from the camera.
“Get out.”
Margaret reached for Leo.
Claire pulled back sharply.
“Don’t touch him.”
That was the moment Vanessa wanted.
She captured Claire shouting, her hair disordered and tears on her face.
The next morning, Daniel received a shortened video.
It showed Claire yelling.
It showed her refusing to hand Leo over.
It did not show Margaret entering with a master key.
It did not include the conversation about the loan documents.
Margaret added a message.
Daniel, I did not want to frighten you, but Claire may be suffering from a serious postpartum condition. We are protecting Leo until you return.
Daniel watched the clip in a military communications room.
At first, fear seized him.
Then training replaced fear.
He replayed the video.
Vanessa’s reflection appeared in the nursery mirror before Margaret claimed she had entered because Claire was alone.
The timestamp jumped forward nine seconds.
The audio changed sharply in the middle of Claire’s sentence.
The video had been edited.
Daniel opened the smart monitor account.
Most of its files had been deleted.
But one cloud upload remained incomplete.
It contained three photographs of financial documents and half of Claire’s warning.
Daniel immediately called Claire.
Margaret answered.
“Claire is sleeping,” she said.
“Wake her.”
“She needs professional help.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Put my wife on the phone.”
There was a pause.
Then the call ended.
Daniel stared at the disconnected screen.
He had forty-three days left on deployment.
