Chapter 5 - The Locked Office
Daniel’s office had remained locked since the day he deployed.
Claire knew where he kept the spare key.
She also knew Daniel would never allow Vanessa to enter without permission.
Yet Claire found Vanessa kneeling beside the office door with a thin piece of metal in her hand.
Vanessa stood quickly.
“I dropped an earring.”
“Under a locked door?”
Vanessa’s expression cooled.
“You’ve become very suspicious.”
“And you’ve become very comfortable in my home.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You married Daniel. That doesn’t make everything his family built belong to you.”
Claire almost answered.
Then she noticed a folder beneath Vanessa’s arm.
The words VANCE FAMILY TRUST were visible along the edge.
Claire reached for it.
Vanessa pulled it away.
“Where did you get that?”
“Margaret asked me to organize some paperwork.”
“In Daniel’s locked office?”
Margaret appeared behind Claire.
Her arrival was too perfectly timed.
“What is happening?” she demanded.
Claire pointed at the folder.
“I want to see those documents.”
“You have no authority over private family matters.”
“I’m Daniel’s wife.”
Margaret gave a humorless smile.
“Wives can be replaced.”
Claire felt the insult, but she refused to react.
She took Leo downstairs and waited until the house grew quiet.
After midnight, she returned with the spare key.
The office had been disturbed.
Desk drawers were open. Files had been rearranged.
One document lay beneath the printer.
It was an application for a home equity loan worth $480,000.
The borrower was listed as Daniel Vance.
The signature line had not yet been completed.
Attached to it was a draft power of attorney giving Margaret control over Daniel’s financial assets during deployment.
Claire photographed every page.
Then she saw a handwritten note in Vanessa’s handwriting.
Get D to sign before homecoming. C cannot know house is protected.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
Claire spun around.
Margaret stood in the doorway.
