Chapter 10 - Daniel’s Silent Homecoming
Daniel landed two days earlier than anyone expected.
He did not call Margaret.
He did not tell Vanessa.
Only Claire knew he might be coming, but even she did not know the exact flight.
Before leaving the base, Daniel spoke with the trust attorney.
The attorney confirmed that someone had recently attempted to verify Daniel’s authority for a home equity application.
The request had included a scanned military identification card and a signature that did not match Daniel’s records.
Daniel asked one question.
“Can they take the house?”
“No,” the attorney answered. “But they may have committed fraud trying.”
Daniel then contacted the sheriff’s department.
Without proof of immediate danger, deputies could not simply arrest his mother.
But they advised him to preserve messages and call immediately if Claire or Leo was being confined or harmed.
Daniel opened the smart nursery monitor account one more time.
A hidden archive had appeared after the device reconnected.
The files were damaged, but the audio was clear enough.
Margaret’s voice said, “Once the petition is filed, Daniel will have no choice.”
Vanessa replied, “And Claire will be gone before he gets here.”
Daniel listened in silence.
Then a new sound came through the live monitor.
Leo was coughing.
Claire said, “Margaret, he has a fever. I’m taking him to the hospital.”
Margaret answered, “You are not embarrassing this family before the photographer arrives.”
Daniel was already inside a rental car.
He called emergency services and gave them the address.
Then he called the sheriff.
“I believe my wife and newborn are being prevented from leaving the house.”
The dispatcher told him units were being sent.
Daniel drove faster.
On the monitor, voices rose.
A glass shattered.
Claire cried out.
Then came the sound Daniel would hear in nightmares for months.
