Chapter 14 - The Longest Night
Leo was taken directly into the pediatric emergency department.
Doctors diagnosed a severe respiratory infection complicated by his narrow airway. The fever had caused swelling, and the delay in treatment had made his breathing dangerously unstable.
He was placed on oxygen and transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit.
Claire sat in a wheelchair outside the room with her injured arm in a sling.
Daniel knelt in front of her.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Claire touched his face.
“You came.”
Daniel closed his eyes against her palm.
“Not soon enough.”
“You heard me.”
“I heard the lock.”
His voice broke.
Claire began crying.
Daniel rested his forehead against hers.
“I should have believed you sooner.”
“You did believe me.”
“I left you in that house with them.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew my mother liked control. I knew she resented our marriage. I still convinced myself she would never endanger a baby.”
Claire looked through the glass at Leo.
“We both wanted to believe she had limits.”
A doctor entered the hallway.
Daniel rose immediately.
“Is he going to survive?”
The doctor’s expression softened.
“He responded to treatment. His oxygen is improving. The next several hours are important, but he is stable.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel caught her before she folded forward.
For the first time since entering the nursery, he allowed himself to cry.
They stayed beside Leo throughout the night.
At 3:17 a.m., his breathing became quieter.
At 5:40, his color returned.
At sunrise, a nurse let Claire hold him.
Leo opened his eyes and wrapped his tiny fingers around the edge of Daniel’s uniform sleeve.
Daniel pressed his lips to his son’s forehead.
“You’re safe,” he whispered. “Both of you are safe.”
But safety did not erase what had happened.
A sheriff’s investigator arrived with new information.
Margaret had been arrested.
Vanessa had also been detained.
