Chapter 3 - The Deleted Message

Claire recovered the deleted voicemail from the phone’s trash folder.

Daniel’s voice filled the dark nursery.

“Hey, sweetheart. I’ve tried your cell four times. Mom says you’re sleeping all day, but I need to hear that from you. Call me when you get this. I love you.”

Claire listened twice.

Then she checked her cell phone.

There were no missed calls.

When she confronted Margaret the next morning, her mother-in-law did not appear embarrassed.

She looked offended.

“You’re accusing me while I’m sacrificing my time to help you?”

“I’m asking why Daniel’s calls aren’t reaching me.”

“Perhaps he doesn’t want every conversation to become another emotional crisis.”

Claire stared at her.

“What emotional crisis?”

Margaret sighed as if Claire were a difficult child.

“You cry. You panic. You imagine people are against you. Daniel is under enough stress.”

Vanessa sat at the kitchen island, slowly stirring her coffee.

“Postpartum hormones can change a person,” she said. “There’s no shame in admitting you’re unstable.”

Claire felt a chill.

She had cried from exhaustion. She had worried when Leo developed a rash. She had once called the pediatrician because he refused two feedings.

None of that made her unstable.

That afternoon, Claire changed every password she could think of.

She created a new email address.

She also activated cloud backup on the smart nursery monitor Daniel had installed before deployment.

The monitor recorded sound whenever Leo cried.

Claire sent Daniel a message through its private family account.

I’m not sleeping all day. Your mother has been intercepting calls. Please don’t mention this until we speak privately.

The message showed as delivered.

Minutes later, the nursery monitor disconnected from the internet.

Claire walked downstairs and found Vanessa standing beside the router.

“Internet problem?” Claire asked.

Vanessa smiled.

“Margaret thought the monitor was making you obsessive.”

That evening, the device reconnected.

Claire checked the account.

Her message to Daniel had been opened.

But no reply appeared.

Downstairs, Margaret was speaking softly on the phone.

“She’s becoming suspicious,” she said.

Claire stopped on the staircase.

Then Margaret added four words that made Claire grip the railing.
