Chapter 15 - The Paid Witness
The therapist named in the guardianship petition was real.
But she had never examined Claire.
Investigators learned that Vanessa had contacted the therapist’s struggling office manager and offered money for a blank letterhead template.
The fake evaluation described Claire as delusional and dangerous.
It recommended that Leo be placed temporarily with Margaret.
There were also staged photographs, edited videos, and a written timeline of “incidents” that had never happened.
Margaret intended to file the petition the morning before Daniel returned.
Once temporary guardianship was granted, she planned to tell Daniel that removing Claire from the house was the only way to keep Leo safe.
Then she would pressure him to sign the power of attorney and loan documents while he was exhausted and frightened.
The loan money would cover Margaret’s debt and save Vanessa’s boutique.
Claire listened as the investigator explained the plan.
Her hands shook.
“They were going to take my baby and use him to steal the house.”
Daniel stood beside her hospital bed.
“They were going to try.”
Claire looked at him.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The house was never my mother’s.”
Claire knew Margaret’s ownership claims had been suspicious, but she had not known the full history.
Daniel explained the foreclosure.
He explained the trust.
He explained how he had allowed Margaret to stay because he did not want the world to know she had lost everything through secret debt.
Claire’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“She treated me like a guest in a house you saved for her?”
“Yes.”
“And you never corrected her?”
“I thought preserving her dignity would help her become better.”
Claire looked toward Leo’s room.
“It only taught her that kindness had no consequences.”
Daniel had no defense.
He sat beside her.
“You’re right.”
The investigator placed a folder on the table.
“There’s another issue.”
Inside was a copy of the trust.
Margaret’s right to remain in the property depended on one condition.
She could not threaten, abuse, or interfere with Daniel’s spouse or children.
By locking Claire and Leo inside the nursery, Margaret had terminated her own right to live there.
