Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Came to Help

Seven weeks earlier, Claire Vance brought Leo home from the hospital alone.

Daniel was thousands of miles away on his final military deployment.

He had watched the birth through a shaky video call, wiping tears from his face as a nurse placed Leo against Claire’s chest.

“I’ll be home before he learns to smile,” Daniel had promised.

Claire believed him.

She also believed Margaret when her mother-in-law offered to move into the guest room temporarily.

“You shouldn’t be alone with a newborn,” Margaret said. “Daniel would want his mother here.”

At first, the help seemed genuine.

Margaret cooked dinner. She folded towels. She held Leo while Claire showered.

Then Vanessa arrived.

Vanessa Bell had grown up with Daniel. She had dated him briefly in college and had remained Margaret’s favorite example of the woman Daniel “should have married.”

She appeared at the front door carrying flowers and an expensive baby blanket.

“Margaret said you were overwhelmed,” Vanessa told Claire. “I’m here to help.”

Claire had never told Margaret she was overwhelmed.

Still, she was exhausted and recovering from a difficult delivery. She did not have the energy to argue.

Within three days, Vanessa had moved luggage into the upstairs office.

Within five, Margaret began correcting everything Claire did.

She criticized how Claire held Leo.

She complained that breastfeeding made the household schedule inconvenient.

She entered the nursery without knocking and took the baby whenever she pleased.

“This family raised children long before you arrived,” Margaret said.

The house changed around Claire.

Margaret moved family photographs into the living room and removed Claire’s wedding portrait.

Vanessa began answering the landline.

The mail disappeared before Claire could collect it.

Then Daniel missed their scheduled Sunday call.

Claire waited beside the crib for two hours.

Margaret finally entered carrying tea.

“He called earlier,” she said casually. “You were sleeping.”

Claire sat upright.

“Why didn’t you wake me?”

“He said you needed rest.”

Daniel had never ended a call without asking to see Leo.

That night, Claire checked the call history.

There was no incoming call from Daniel.

But someone had deleted a voicemail.

👉 Claire could forgive unwanted advice—but she could not ignore the fact that someone inside the house was cutting Daniel away from his own family.
