Chapter 12 - The Soldier at the Door

Daniel entered through the unlocked front door wearing his uniform.
Vanessa saw him first.
Her face changed instantly.
“Daniel?”
The photographer stood beside the fireplace, confused.
Margaret came out of the dining room.
For one second, she appeared delighted.
Then she noticed Daniel’s expression.
“Why is the nursery locked?” he asked.
Margaret recovered quickly.
“Claire is having an episode.”
Daniel moved toward the stairs.
“She locked herself inside with Leo,” Vanessa added. “We’ve been trying to help.”
Daniel stopped.
He looked at the key in Margaret’s hand.
“If she locked herself in, why do you have the key?”
Neither woman answered.
A weak cry came from upstairs.
Daniel ran.
Margaret followed him, speaking rapidly.
“You need to understand what she’s been doing. She is not well. We were protecting your son.”
Daniel reached the nursery door.
“Claire?”
A broken voice answered.
“Daniel…”
He tried the handle.
Locked.
“Open it.”
Margaret remained several steps below.
“She may become violent.”
Daniel turned his head.
“Open the door.”
Something in his voice finally made Vanessa move.
She took the key from Margaret and tossed it up the stairs.
Daniel caught it.
The door opened only a few inches before striking the overturned chair.
He forced it wider.
The smell of spilled wine filled the room.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Claire lay beside the crib, one arm wrapped protectively around Leo.
Daniel lifted his son.
Leo’s body was hot, but his hands felt cold.
His breathing was thin and uneven.
Daniel’s medical training took over.
He supported Leo’s airway and called to Claire.
“Stay with me. Help is coming.”
Margaret entered behind him.
“Don’t be dramatic,” she said. “It’s my house.”
Claire looked at Daniel through tears.
“Save Leo.”
Daniel’s second phone vibrated.
EMS AT THE GATE.
He looked at the bright screen, then at his mother.
“They’re here.”
Within seconds, paramedics and deputies filled the upstairs hallway.
Daniel showed Margaret the verified deed.
“Not your house, Mom.”
But before the deputy reached her, Vanessa pointed at Claire.
“She did this to herself!”
Daniel slowly turned toward Claire’s phone on the cabinet.

Its recording timer was still running.
👉 Vanessa’s accusation lasted only seconds—because Claire’s stolen phone had captured the one conversation neither woman could explain away.
