Chapter 6 - THE PHONE THAT NEVER LOOKED AWAY
Claire’s phone captured the entire room.
Vivian did not simply kick without warning.
The recording showed her pushing back her chair and crossing nearly six feet.
Claire raised one hand.
Vivian said:
“You will not ruin this family with another performance.”
Then her heel struck Claire’s stomach.
There was no accidental collision.
No stumble.
No attempt to catch her.
After Claire fell, Vivian looked down and said:
“Now perhaps we can finish dinner.”
The recording continued while Daniel called emergency services.
Sabrina moved toward the phone.
A guest named Michael Torres stopped her.
“Don’t touch evidence.”
Sabrina replied:
“It’s a private family video.”
Michael was a retired judge and one of Arthur Bellamy’s oldest friends.
He picked up the phone and handed it directly to Daniel.
Vivian attempted to change the story before the ambulance arrived.
She said Claire had lunged at her.
She claimed her leg moved instinctively.
The guests had watched everything.
Still, some remained silent.
Vivian controlled their business relationships.
That silence angered Michael.
“You all saw a pregnant woman attacked,” he said. “Decide carefully what kind of witnesses you intend to become.”
At the hospital, police copied the video.
Vivian’s attorneys requested that it remain private.
Daniel refused to interfere.
For the first time, he did not ask Claire to avoid a scandal.
He sat beside her bed holding the silver spoon.
“You were going to tell me tonight.”
Claire nodded.
“Why didn’t you call me after the appointment?”
“I wanted to see your face.”
His eyes filled.
“You almost lost them before I knew they existed.”
Claire turned toward him.
“I almost lost them because your mother knew no one would stop her.”
The truth landed harder than accusation.
Daniel had always believed he could control Vivian when something truly mattered.
But everything had mattered to Claire.
He simply acted only after the violence became impossible to minimize.
The doctor returned.
Both babies remained stable, but Claire had placental bruising and required observation.
Police informed Vivian she could not enter the room.
Sabrina protested.
“We’re family.”
Claire spoke from the bed.
“No.”
The officer closed the door.
Then Michael Torres called Daniel.
He had reviewed the company counsel’s conflict disclosures.
Crestland Capital’s acquisition team included a secret investor.
