Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED EVERY CELEBRATION

Vivian had controlled Bellamy family events for thirty years.
Birthdays required approved guest lists.
Weddings required approved flowers.
Even funerals required approved grief.
Claire learned this during her engagement to Daniel.
Vivian replaced her wedding menu without asking.
She moved Claire’s widowed mother away from the family table.
When Claire objected, Vivian smiled.
“You married into a family with standards.”
Daniel apologized afterward.
He always apologized privately.
Publicly, he avoided humiliating his mother.
That difference became the space Vivian occupied.
She interrupted Claire.
Corrected her.
Introduced her as “Daniel’s sweet little accountant,” despite Claire having uncovered tax fraud for federal prosecutors before marriage.
Whenever Claire resisted, Vivian accused her of competing for Daniel’s loyalty.
“You should be grateful,” Vivian told her. “Most women would never be accepted into this family.”
Claire had grown up above her parents’ hardware store.
She had no old money, famous relatives, or country-club connections.
Vivian treated those facts as moral failures.
The fertility struggle gave her a sharper weapon.
She sent Daniel articles about surrogacy without including Claire.
She invited women with young children to lunches and described them as “naturally maternal.”
At the previous Christmas dinner, she placed a silver cradle beneath the tree.
“For the grandchild I’m still waiting for,” she said.
Daniel finally ordered her to stop.
Vivian cried for two days.
Then she told relatives Claire was separating her from her only son.
Daniel asked Claire to ignore the comments.
“She won’t change.”
Claire answered quietly.
“Then you need to change what she’s allowed to do.”
He promised stronger boundaries.
Work consumed him before he enforced them.
Now, at the anniversary dinner, Vivian noticed the velvet box beside Claire’s plate.
“What is that?” she asked.
“A gift for Daniel.”
“You already gave him a watch.”
“This is different.”
Vivian looked toward Sabrina.
Sabrina understood.
Before the appetizers arrived, she placed a corporate folder beside Daniel’s chair.
The cover read:
CRESTLAND ACQUISITION—FINAL FAMILY CONSENT.
Vivian raised her glass.
“Tonight, we celebrate not only five years of marriage, but the future of Bellamy House.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What acquisition?”
His expression tightened.
“We were going to discuss it after dinner.”
Vivian smiled.
“No reason to spoil the surprise.”
Claire opened the folder.
The proposed sale would transfer Bellamy House’s most valuable properties to Crestland Capital.
The closing deadline was midnight.

Her audit rights would end immediately after the sale.
👉 Vivian had turned the anniversary dinner into a signing ceremony designed to bury the missing millions before Claire could reveal them.
