Chapter 1 - THE KICK BENEATH THE CHANDELIER

The crystal glass shattered before Claire Bellamy hit the floor.
One second, she had been standing beside the anniversary table with a velvet box in her hand.
The next, Vivian Bellamy’s heel drove into her abdomen.
Claire folded around her stomach and collapsed onto the polished stone.
“You’re always desperate for attention,” Vivian said.
The private dining room went silent.
Inside the open velvet box lay a silver baby spoon engraved with one word.
Soon.
Daniel pushed back his chair so violently it overturned.
“Claire!”
He dropped beside his wife and lifted her head onto his lap.
Claire’s cream dress darkened beneath one elbow where broken glass had cut her skin. Her face twisted with pain.
“Call 911!” Daniel shouted.
Vivian remained standing over them.
“She staged this whole performance because tonight was supposed to be about your marriage.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around Daniel’s sleeve.
“My phone,” she whispered.
It rested beside the white centerpiece, its camera still recording.
The screen displayed the final seconds clearly.
Vivian rising.
Vivian crossing the room.
Vivian drawing back her leg.
Vivian kicking Claire before the glass fell.
Daniel stared at the video.
His mother’s confidence vanished.
At the hospital, Claire lay beneath cold white lights while doctors examined her.
Vivian and Daniel’s sister, Sabrina, waited near the door.
Neither looked frightened for Claire.
They looked frightened of the phone Daniel still held.
The obstetrician entered carrying an ultrasound report.
“Both babies still have heartbeats.”
Daniel froze.
“Both?”
Claire opened her eyes.
“Twins,” she whispered.
The doctor placed the report at the foot of the bed.
“This injury is consistent with a deliberate blow. Hospital security has already contacted police.”
Vivian stepped backward.
Daniel looked from the two tiny shapes on the ultrasound to his mother.
“You knew she might be pregnant.”
Vivian shook her head.
“I thought she was lying.”
Claire’s phone vibrated in Daniel’s hand.
A recording had continued after the ambulance left.
On it, Vivian whispered to Sabrina:

“If those babies are real, the trust audit starts the day they’re born.”
👉 Vivian had not attacked Claire only because she hated an announcement—the unborn children threatened to expose what she had done with the Bellamy fortune.
