Chapter 10 - THE GUEST LIST VIVIAN DESIGNED

The anniversary dinner guests had not been chosen by Daniel.
Vivian selected them.
Three were board members who supported Crestland.
Two were lenders.
One represented the acquisition fund.
The remaining guests were family friends accustomed to following Vivian’s lead.
Claire’s closest friend was removed from the list at the last minute.
The official excuse was limited seating.
Michael Torres remained only because Arthur’s trust required his presence for major family transactions.
Vivian expected Claire to object to the sale.
She planned to portray her as emotional in front of the exact people whose votes mattered.
Sabrina prepared talking points.
Claire fears change.
Claire uses fertility struggles to control Daniel.
Claire does not understand operational finance.
The kick went further than the plan.
The public discrediting did not.
Investigators recovered a draft email Vivian intended to send after dinner.
Due to an unfortunate emotional incident involving Claire, Daniel has requested time away from company decisions. The family voting block will proceed with Crestland.
Vivian expected Daniel to defend Claire privately while protecting the company publicly.
She expected his shame to keep him from exposing his own mother.
Daniel read the draft beside Mara.
“She knew exactly what I would do.”
Mara answered, “She knew what you had always done.”
The sentence stayed with him.
The board investigation revealed Vivian had manipulated meeting records for years.
She removed Claire’s objections from minutes.
She labeled risk reports incomplete.
She told directors Daniel supported decisions he had never reviewed.
The sale vote collapsed permanently.
Crestland withdrew.
Its executives claimed they did not know the funds connected to Heritage were stolen.
Federal investigators were not convinced.
Several properties were placed under court supervision.
Vivian’s legal team offered an agreement.
She would surrender her voting block and repay six million dollars.
In return, Claire would support reducing the assault charge.
Mara delivered the offer.
Claire did not need time.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I agree.”
Claire studied his face.
Months earlier, he would have asked whether a public trial was necessary.
Now he said:
“My mother does not get to buy privacy with money she stole.”
It was the first time Claire felt he understood the issue without requiring her to teach it.
Then the prosecutor revealed another piece of evidence.
Vivian had purchased a one-way ticket for Sabrina on the morning after the dinner.

The destination was Switzerland.
👉 The anniversary signing was supposed to be followed by Sabrina leaving the country with the records connecting Heritage to the stolen funds.
