Chapter 2 - THE ANNIVERSARY SURPRISE
That morning, Claire had sat alone inside her obstetrician’s office.
The ultrasound technician moved the wand slowly across her abdomen.
Then she smiled.
“There are two.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“Two what?”
“Two babies. Two strong heartbeats.”
For four years, Claire and Daniel had tried to become parents.
There had been appointments, blood tests, canceled vacations, and months when Claire could not walk past the nursery aisle in a store without looking away.
Vivian blamed her openly.
“A Bellamy man should not have to wait this long for an heir,” she once said across a holiday table.
Daniel defended Claire then.
But every defense became another argument.
Eventually, Claire asked him to stop discussing their fertility with his mother.
Daniel agreed.
Vivian continued asking anyway.
Claire had not used fertility treatment that month.
She had stopped tracking dates and allowed herself to believe motherhood might not happen.
Now the monitor showed two flickering hearts.
She cried so hard the technician handed her tissues twice.
Claire decided to tell Daniel during their fifth-anniversary dinner.
She purchased a tiny silver spoon and had Soon engraved along the handle.
The celebration would include only family and six longtime friends.
Daniel believed it was a simple dinner at Bellamy House, the flagship hotel his grandfather built.
Claire placed her phone beside the centerpiece to record his reaction.
She wanted their children to see the moment their father learned they existed.
Before leaving the clinic, however, Claire received an email from the company’s internal auditor.
URGENT: HERITAGE CONSULTING PAYMENTS NOW EXCEED $18.4 MILLION.
Claire was not merely Daniel’s wife.
She was a forensic accountant and a nonexecutive director of Bellamy House Hospitality.
For months, she had been reviewing suspicious payments approved by Vivian.
The company called them heritage-preservation expenses.
The vendors had no employees.
Several addresses led to empty offices.
Claire intended to tell Daniel about the twins first.
Then she would show him the audit file privately.
She did not know Vivian had already accessed her calendar through Sabrina.
By noon, Vivian knew Claire had visited an obstetrician.
She did not know the result.
She assumed Claire was preparing another emotional appeal to stop Daniel from signing a major company sale.
At 4:16 p.m., Vivian messaged Sabrina:

SHE’LL ANNOUNCE SOME PREGNANCY SCARE TONIGHT. MAKE SURE DANIEL SIGNS BEFORE SHE DISTRACTS HIM.
