Chapter 16 - THE APOLOGY WITHOUT A REQUEST
Daniel came to Claire’s apartment every morning at six.
He prepared bottles.
Changed diapers.
Washed laundry.
Then he left before company meetings.
He did not describe childcare as helping Claire.
They were his children too.
When Hope cried through the night, Daniel stayed awake.
When Arthur developed reflux, he attended every pediatric appointment.
He canceled events instead of asking Claire to handle them alone.
One evening, after the twins slept, Daniel placed an envelope on the table.
Claire did not open it.
“What is it?”
“My resignation as chief executive.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“The board selected an outside CEO.”
“You could remain as chair.”
“I declined.”
“Because of me?”
“Because I spent years believing Bellamy House needed a Bellamy man more than it needed honest systems.”
Claire opened the envelope.
The resignation had already been accepted.
Daniel would remain a shareholder and nonexecutive director.
He planned to work with the company’s employee housing foundation.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.”
Claire waited.
He did not add but.
He did not mention stress, Vivian’s upbringing, or the company.
“I’m sorry I treated your pain like something to manage privately. I’m sorry you had to record the truth before I believed how far my mother would go. I’m sorry I asked you to accept what I was afraid to confront.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Do you want me to come home?”
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised her.
“But I’m not asking.”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know whether I can trust you again.”
“I know.”
“What happens if I never do?”
“I will still be a father who respects you.”
Claire cried then.
Not because the marriage was repaired.
Because Daniel had finally offered accountability without using it as a transaction.
They began counseling.
Some sessions were painful.
Claire admitted she had hidden parts of the audit because she expected Daniel to defend Vivian.
Daniel admitted she had been right.
He described how shame made him avoid questions.
They stopped calling conflict disloyalty.
Months passed.
Claire eventually invited Daniel to stay overnight.
Later, she invited him home.
Not to the old Bellamy estate.
They sold that house.
They chose a smaller place together.
No formal dining room.
