Chapter 9 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM

Noah was receiving antibiotics when Ryan entered the pediatric emergency department.

His son looked impossibly small beneath the monitor wires.

Ryan crossed the room and lifted him carefully.

The baby was too weak to protest.

Diane stood near the door.

“She exaggerates everything,” she said.

Ryan did not answer.

Elena remained behind him, bruised and silent.

The doctor explained that Noah had a serious urinary infection that had entered his bloodstream.

Treatment had begun quickly enough to give him an excellent chance of recovery.

But the delay had been dangerous.

“Another hour could’ve killed him.”

Ryan looked at Elena’s face.

“I begged them to help him,” she said.

She placed the cracked phone on the table.

Ryan opened the camera application.

Diane’s confidence vanished.

The footage played.

Keys taken.

Phone smashed.

Door blocked.

Chloe’s hand striking Elena.

Diane attempting to silence her.

“You lied to me,” Ryan said.

“I was trying to manage a woman who had lost control.”

“No.”

His voice remained low.

“You were trying to make her look like she had.”

Diane stepped toward him.

“I am your mother.”

Ryan moved in front of Elena.

“You’re also the reason my son almost died.”

Hospital security entered.

Diane attempted to grab the phone.

An officer stopped her.

The social worker watched the footage on a tablet.

When Diane’s recorded voice mentioned the next morning’s hearing, the social worker asked for the court documents.

Diane refused.

Elena’s attorney arrived with copies.

An emergency guardianship petition had been filed that afternoon.

It accused Elena of postpartum psychosis, reckless driving, and refusing medical care for Noah.

Ryan’s electronic signature appeared beneath a supporting statement.

He stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

Diane answered too quickly.

“You gave me permission to handle family matters.”

“Not to forge my name.”

Chloe backed toward the hallway.

Security blocked her.

The hospital placed Diane and Chloe under a no-contact order while police reviewed the assault and restraint evidence.

Ryan sat beside Elena after they were removed.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“You watched the cameras because you finally doubted her.”

He lowered his head.

“I should have believed you before I needed video.”

“Yes.”

The single word hurt more because it was deserved.

Then Elena’s attorney placed another document on the table.

The guardianship petition requested more than temporary custody.

It asked the court to give Diane emergency control over Noah’s trust.

👉 The attack inside the house was only one part of Diane’s plan—the real target was the fortune she would lose the next morning.
