Chapter 13 - CHLOE’S CONFESSION
Chloe requested a meeting with prosecutors.
Her attorney advised cooperation.
She entered wearing county-issued clothing and no makeup.
For the first time, she looked younger than Elena remembered.
Not innocent.
Young.
Chloe admitted Diane created the plan after learning the trust transfer date.
Diane had already spent money she could not replace.
A private lender expected repayment.
If the audit began, the fraud would become public.
Diane needed temporary control of Noah’s trust long enough to move nine million dollars, repay the lender, and hide earlier withdrawals.
The guardianship case required proof that Elena was unfit.
Diane began with edited videos.
When that seemed insufficient, she arranged for Dr. Crane’s opinion.
The fever arrived unexpectedly.
Diane called it “a gift.”
Elena’s stomach turned when she heard the words.
Chloe continued.
“Mom said we only had to keep Noah home until the evaluator arrived.”
“Even after his temperature increased?” the prosecutor asked.
“I wanted to call an ambulance.”
“But you didn’t.”
Chloe looked down.
“She said Elena would take everything from us.”
Elena spoke for the first time.
“It was Noah’s trust.”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“Mom said it belonged to the family.”
“My son is family.”
“I know.”
“No. You knew he was sick, and you smashed the phone.”
Chloe began crying.
Elena did not comfort her.
Chloe revealed another secret.
Diane had intercepted messages between Elena and Ryan for weeks.
She deleted Ryan’s apologies.
She blocked Elena’s calls during meetings.
She changed calendar reminders so Ryan believed Elena had skipped pediatric appointments.
The distance growing inside the marriage had been encouraged.
But not created from nothing.
Ryan had allowed Diane to remain between them.
Chloe also admitted signing Ryan’s name on the guardianship statement.
Diane provided his electronic signature from an old tax document.
The final confession involved Dr. Crane.
Diane promised the consultant a paid role managing family wellness programs after gaining control of the trust.
Dr. Crane knew the petition exaggerated Elena’s symptoms.
She signed anyway.
Chloe agreed to testify against Diane and Dr. Crane.
Her cooperation could reduce her sentence.
It would not eliminate it.
Before leaving, she looked at Elena.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Elena held Noah’s tiny hand.
