Chapter 2 - THREE DAYS BEFORE THE FEVER

Three days earlier, Ryan zipped his suitcase beside the nursery.
Elena sat in the rocking chair with Noah sleeping against her chest.
She had given birth eight weeks before.
The delivery had been difficult. She had lost a dangerous amount of blood and still became dizzy when she stood too quickly.
Sleep came in fragments.
Some mornings, even taking a shower felt like an accomplishment.
Ryan knelt beside her.
“I hate leaving right now.”
“Then don’t.”
The answer surprised him.
Elena rarely asked him to cancel work.
Bennett Pediatric Technologies was preparing for an acquisition that could protect hundreds of jobs. The final negotiations were in Chicago.
“I’ll be gone two nights,” he said. “Three at most.”
“Your mother said she’s staying here.”
“She wants to help.”
“She wants to supervise.”
Ryan exhaled.
Diane had never approved of Elena.
She called her too sensitive, too independent, and too unwilling to accept “family guidance.”
Since Noah’s birth, the criticism had become constant.
Diane questioned Elena’s feeding schedule.
She rearranged the nursery without permission.
She told relatives that Elena was emotionally unstable after delivery.
Ryan always defended his mother the same way.
“She means well.”
Elena looked down at Noah.
“Meaning well doesn’t make me feel safe.”
Ryan touched her shoulder.
“If anything happens, call me.”
“I called you last week when she took Noah from my arms.”
“She thought you needed rest.”
“I told her to give him back.”
Ryan had spoken to Diane afterward.
Diane cried.
She claimed Elena misunderstood an act of kindness.
By dinner, Ryan found himself comforting his mother instead of protecting his wife.
He knew it.
He simply did not know how to change a pattern he had followed his whole life.
“I’ll tell her to respect your boundaries,” he promised.
Elena’s expression did not soften.
“Boundaries don’t work when I’m the only one expected to enforce them.”
Before leaving, Ryan kissed Noah and placed his forehead against Elena’s.
“I trust you.”
She wanted to believe him.
But after his car disappeared, Diane entered using her own key.
Chloe followed carrying two suitcases.
Diane looked around the home as though she had regained possession of something.
“Ryan asked us to stay until he returns.”
“He said you were checking in.”
“He knows you need more help than you admit.”
Chloe placed her phone on the kitchen counter.

Its camera was already recording.
👉 Ryan left believing his family would support Elena, unaware that Diane and Chloe had arrived with a plan to document her “failure.”
