Chapter 5 - THE TEMPERATURE DIANE REFUSED TO BELIEVE

Noah stopped finishing his bottle at six thirty.
By seven, he felt unusually warm.
Elena placed a digital thermometer against his forehead.
101.4.
She immediately called the pediatrician’s after-hours line.
The nurse’s instructions were clear.
“Because he is under three months old, any temperature above 100.4 requires emergency evaluation.”
Elena repeated the words aloud so Diane could hear.
“I’m taking him in.”
Diane looked up from the couch.
“Babies get warm.”
“The nurse said he needs the ER.”
“Those lines are designed to avoid liability.”
Elena wrapped Noah in a light blanket and reached for her keys.
They were missing.
“Where are they?”
Diane did not move.
“You’re exhausted and taking pain medication. You should not drive.”
“I took ibuprofen.”
“Chloe can check his temperature.”
Chloe entered with another thermometer.
She pressed it incorrectly against Noah’s clothing.
“Ninety-nine point eight.”
“You didn’t touch his skin.”
“He’s fine.”
Noah made a weak, unfamiliar cry.
Elena’s fear sharpened.
“Give me the keys.”
Diane folded her hands.
“You are frightening yourself.”
Elena called Ryan.
The call went directly to voicemail.
Diane had told him to silence his phone during the acquisition dinner.
Elena left a message.
“Noah has a fever. I’m taking him to the hospital.”
Chloe reached for the phone.
“Don’t make Ryan panic before his meeting.”
Elena pulled away.
Diane stepped between her and the front door.
“You are not driving anywhere.”
“You don’t have that authority.”
“The court may disagree tomorrow.”
The words confirmed everything.
Elena looked at her son.
The guardianship hearing.
The prepared neglect claim.
The evaluator.
Diane needed evidence that Elena mishandled an emergency.
“But if I take him in, there is no neglect,” Elena said.
Diane’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
It was enough.
Elena understood.
They wanted Noah to remain home while his condition worsened.
By morning, they would claim Elena had refused care.
Diane could present herself as the grandmother who discovered the sick baby and saved him.
“You’re using his fever,” Elena whispered.
Diane stood.
“Watch your accusations.”
Elena moved toward the door.
Chloe grabbed her arm.
May you like
Noah began crying.
👉 Elena finally saw the full trap, but the two women standing between her and the hospital were willing to risk a newborn’s life to complete it.
