Chapter 7 - THE DOOR THEY BLOCKED

The alarm company called the house.

Diane answered.

“This is the Bennett residence.”

“We received a medical emergency signal.”

“It was accidental.”

In the nursery, Elena heard the call through the open door.

She shouted, “Send an ambulance!”

Diane covered the phone.

“My daughter-in-law is experiencing postpartum anxiety.”

The operator’s voice became firm.

“Is an infant present?”

Diane ended the call.

The company dispatched emergency services anyway.

Diane walked into the nursery.

“What did you press?”

Elena held Noah closer.

“Stay away from us.”

Chloe appeared behind her.

“You are making everything worse.”

“Noah is getting weaker.”

Diane reached for the baby.

Elena turned her body away.

“Do not touch him.”

Diane’s face hardened.

“Tomorrow, a judge will see exactly why you should not be alone with a child.”

Elena looked toward the nursery camera.

She hoped it was still recording.

“Say that again.”

Diane noticed her eyes move.

She followed the direction.

“Chloe, unplug it.”

Chloe pulled the nursery camera from the wall.

The final local image vanished.

But the kitchen, hallway, and doorbell cameras continued uploading.

Sirens approached.

Diane became alarmed.

She shoved a chair against the front door and ordered Chloe to clean the broken phone pieces.

Elena entered the hallway.

“Move the chair.”

“If paramedics see you like this, they’ll place you under observation,” Diane said.

“Good. Then they’ll also see Noah.”

“You think anyone will believe a crying woman who hasn’t slept in two months?”

Elena lifted her chin.

“They only need to believe the thermometer.”

Someone knocked.

“Emergency medical services!”

Elena screamed.

Diane covered her mouth.

Elena bit her hand and pulled away.

Chloe slapped her.

The force turned Elena’s head.

The doorbell camera recorded the sound through the wall.

Outside, paramedics heard the struggle.

A firefighter forced the door open.

The chair scraped across the floor.

Diane immediately changed her voice.

“Thank God you’re here. Elena refused to let us take the baby.”

Elena stared at her.

The lie was effortless.

A paramedic took Noah.

The thermometer read 104.6.

His breathing was rapid and shallow.

“We’re leaving now.”

Elena climbed into the ambulance.

Diane attempted to follow.

The paramedic stopped her.

“Only the child’s parent.”

“I’m his grandmother.”

Elena looked at the man.

“She blocked the door.”

For the first time that night, someone believed her without asking Diane for another version.

👉 Noah had finally reached medical care, but Diane was already calling Ryan with a story designed to make Elena look responsible for every lost minute.
