The petition described Elena as emotionally unstable.
It claimed she forgot feedings, screamed without cause, and repeatedly endangered Noah.
Chloe provided a sworn statement.
Diane submitted photographs from the staged kitchen.
A postpartum consultant named Dr. Melissa Crane wrote that Elena showed symptoms consistent with severe psychosis.
Dr. Crane had never met Elena.
Her opinion was based entirely on information provided by Diane.
Ryan read the documents beside Noah’s hospital bed.
Every normal moment of exhaustion had been rewritten as illness.
Elena crying after a sleepless night.
Elena asking to hold her own child.
Elena forgetting a laundry load.
Elena objecting when Diane entered without permission.
Diane turned motherhood into evidence against the mother.
The petition requested that Diane become Noah’s temporary guardian.
It also requested that Ryan receive limited supervised access because his work schedule prevented full-time care.
Ryan looked up.
“She planned to take him from both of us.”
Elena’s attorney nodded.
“The language also gives her authority over the Bennett Child Legacy Trust.”
The hearing was scheduled for nine the next morning.
Diane expected Elena to arrive exhausted, bruised, and accused of delaying medical care.
She expected Ryan to remain in Chicago.
The judge would see a sick baby, a frightened grandmother, and a prepared file.
The cameras destroyed that story.
Elena asked the attorney to contact Thomas Bennett’s original estate lawyer.
“Why?”
“Diane is terrified of the audit.”
Ryan frowned.
“What audit?”
He knew control would transfer after sixty days.
He did not know his father had required forensic review of Diane’s entire management period.
The estate lawyer explained that Thomas suspected unauthorized withdrawals before his death.
He appointed Elena—not Ryan—as the primary audit representative.
“Why Elena?” Ryan asked.
“Because your father believed you would struggle to challenge your mother.”
The words landed heavily.
Thomas had predicted the exact weakness Diane used.
Ryan looked toward Elena.
“My father trusted you to do what I couldn’t.”
“He trusted me to ask questions.”
Ryan examined the guardianship petition again.
If Diane gained control before the transfer, she could delay the audit and manage Noah’s assets.
But money alone did not explain risking the baby’s life.
The estate lawyer opened a sealed instruction from Thomas.
If evidence of fraud appeared, Diane would lose not only trust authority but her lifetime home, allowance, and family-company shares.
