Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER THEY CALLED UNSTABLE

Diane began keeping notes.

Every time Elena cried, Diane wrote down the time.

Every time Noah woke during the night, she described Elena as overwhelmed.

When Elena forgot where she placed a bottle cap, Diane called it confusion.

When she asked Diane to leave the nursery, Diane called it aggression.

Chloe recorded short videos.

Never the beginning.

Only the moment Elena finally raised her voice.

On the first afternoon, Diane moved Noah’s bassinet into the guest room.

Elena moved it back.

Diane photographed her carrying it.

“She should not be lifting anything,” Diane whispered into Chloe’s camera. “She ignores medical advice.”

Elena saw them.

“Stop recording me.”

“We’re protecting ourselves,” Chloe said.

“From what?”

“Your accusations.”

That evening, Ryan called from his hotel.

Diane answered Elena’s phone before she reached it.

“We’re having a difficult night,” she told him.

“What happened?”

“Elena became upset because I fed Noah while she was sleeping.”

“I wasn’t sleeping,” Elena said from across the kitchen. “I told you he had already eaten.”

Diane lowered her voice.

“She’s becoming paranoid.”

Elena took the phone.

“Ryan, I need them to leave.”

He paused.

The acquisition meeting began in twenty minutes. Lawyers were waiting downstairs.

“Can we get through two days?”

“No.”

“Mom says you haven’t slept.”

“Because she keeps taking Noah.”

“I’m trying to help,” Diane said loudly enough for him to hear.

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Elena, please let them help until I’m home.”

The sentence landed like a door locking.

Diane smiled.

Elena ended the call.

That night, she opened a secure journal application on her tablet.

She documented every incident.

The bassinet.

The recordings.

The phone calls Diane interrupted.

The way Chloe repeatedly asked whether Elena had thoughts of harming herself.

She had no such thoughts.

But the question felt rehearsed.

At 2:10 a.m., Elena entered the kitchen for water.

She heard Diane speaking to Chloe in the laundry room.

“The evaluator only needs enough doubt for an emergency order.”

Chloe whispered, “What if Ryan refuses?”

“He won’t. He always believes me once I start crying.”

Elena backed away before they saw her.

She did not yet know what emergency order they meant.

But she finally understood they had not come to help.

👉 Diane was not simply criticizing Elena’s motherhood—she was building a file for someone who had not yet entered the house.
