Chapter 5 - THE DOCUMENT ELENA REFUSED TO SIGN
Three weeks before the engagement party, Celeste visited Elena’s home alone.
She brought pastries and a leather folder.
Elena served coffee in the small kitchen where photographs of Adrian filled every wall.
Celeste looked around.
“You could live somewhere better.”
“I like it here.”
“People say that when they’re afraid of change.”
Elena placed the coffee down.
“What do you need?”
Celeste opened the folder.
The document was labeled Community Heritage Partnership Consent.
It gave Monroe Holdings permission to use Elena’s name, image, and personal story in a redevelopment campaign.
The project promised to transform struggling neighborhoods.
Elena read every page.
One clause authorized property purchases through companies bearing her name.
Another allowed financial guarantees connected to Adrian’s philanthropic commitments.
“I’m not signing this.”
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
“It’s for charity.”
“It allows your father to borrow money under my identity.”
“It allows efficient structuring.”
“I don’t own a company.”
“You would only be an honorary representative.”
“Then my signature should not be required.”
Celeste leaned back.
“Adrian already supports the initiative.”
“Did he read this?”
“He trusts me.”
Elena closed the folder.
“My son trusts too easily when he loves someone.”
Celeste’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t think I’m good enough for him.”
“I think you came here because you hoped an old woman would sign without reading.”
The sentence landed cleanly.
Celeste stood.
“You still see yourself as the woman scrubbing floors.”
“I see nothing shameful in work.”
“You should understand how easily people can return to where they started.”
Elena remained seated.
“Is that a threat?”
“It’s advice. Adrian’s world has changed. Do not become a problem he has to solve.”
Elena placed the unsigned folder inside Celeste’s bag.
“Leave my house.”
Celeste did.
But the document did not disappear.
Two days later, Monroe Holdings submitted a nearly identical consent form to a lender.
Elena’s signature appeared at the bottom.
It was forged.
The lender believed Adrian’s mother had endorsed the project and that Ruiz Global would eventually guarantee it.
Charles received the loan.
The money disappeared into old Monroe debts.
Elena never knew.
