Twenty years earlier, Elena had saved enough money to make a down payment on a small apartment building.

The property was sold to another buyer hours before closing.
Elena assumed she had been outbid.

Elena nodded.
“I was.”
The woman took her hand.
“You came back.”
Elena smiled.
