Chapter 13 - THE MAN INSIDE ADRIAN’S COMPANY

The executive was Paul Mercer, Ruiz Global’s chief financial officer.

He had joined the company during its first major expansion.

Adrian trusted him completely.

Paul knew the structure of the engagement trust.

He knew which guarantees required Adrian’s direct approval.

He knew Elena’s personal information appeared inside charitable records.

Access logs showed Paul downloaded Elena’s church-donation form.

He also opened the digital-signature system on the day Adrian flew to Singapore.

Marcus confronted him.

Paul denied wrongdoing until investigators presented bank records.

Monroe Holdings paid a consulting company owned by Paul’s wife.

The total exceeded five million dollars.

Paul admitted he helped Charles design the cross-guarantee.

He insisted Adrian had verbally approved broad support.

“Broad support is not authorization to forge signatures,” Marcus said.

Paul looked toward Adrian.

“You wanted the Monroe name.”

Adrian did not deny it.

“You told us the engagement would open markets.”

“I wanted a marriage, not a fraudulent merger.”

“You wanted both.”

The accusation contained some truth.

Adrian had enjoyed the prestige of the Monroe connection.

He had accepted introductions, political invitations, and favorable press.

He asked fewer questions because the alliance made his success look complete.

Paul continued.

“Charles said the guarantees would never be used.”

“He lied.”

“We all believed you would save them if necessary.”

Adrian looked toward Elena.

The pattern repeated.

Everyone assumed his loyalty would become financial rescue.

Paul entered a cooperation agreement.

He surrendered emails showing Charles had planned the engagement strategy before Celeste met Adrian.

Celeste’s first appearance at the charity auction had not been accidental.

Charles knew Adrian would attend.

He instructed Celeste to learn his history.

His attachment to Elena.

His insecurity about elite acceptance.

His habit of helping struggling companies.

One message read:

HE WANTS TO PROVE THE BOY FROM THE SLUMS BELONGS WITH FAMILIES LIKE OURS.

Another said:

MAKE HIS MOTHER FEEL WELCOME UNTIL THE TRUSTS ARE LINKED.

Adrian felt physically sick.

Celeste had been directed toward him.

But the emails also showed her becoming more ambitious than her father expected.

She proposed the engagement trust.

She created White Garden.

She suggested using Elena’s identity.

Charles warned her once.

DO NOT ANTAGONIZE THE MOTHER. ADRIAN’S LOYALTY TO HER IS THE ONLY THING STRONGER THAN HIS NEED FOR ACCEPTANCE.

Celeste replied:

May you like

THEN I’LL MAKE HIM ASHAMED OF HER.

👉 Celeste’s cruelty was not spontaneous prejudice—it was a strategy designed to weaken the strongest relationship in Adrian’s life.
