Chapter 11 - THE SON WHO DIDN’T ASK ENOUGH QUESTIONS
Adrian moved Elena into a guest suite while security reviewed threats.
She resisted.
“I have my own home.”
“Your address appears in Monroe files.”
“Then put security there.”
“You were just assaulted.”
“And now you are making decisions for me because you are afraid.”
Adrian stopped.
He had spent his entire life wanting to protect Elena.
Sometimes protection became another form of control.
“What do you want?” he asked.
“To go home tomorrow.”
“All right.”
“And no reporters.”
“Agreed.”
“And I choose the security team.”
Adrian almost objected.
Then he nodded.
Elena sat beside the window.
“You want to know why I didn’t tell you everything.”
“Yes.”
“You were happy.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No. It isn’t.”
She described the lunch insult.
The missing invitations.
The forged charity document.
The legal notice.
Each time, she considered calling him.
Each time, Celeste had already shaped the story.
“She said you thought I was threatened by the wedding,” Elena explained.
“I never said that.”
“You also never asked me directly.”
Adrian sat down.
The truth hurt.
He had accepted Celeste’s interpretations because they fit the life he wanted.
A polished engagement.

A future without conflict between where he came from and where he had arrived.
Celeste made Elena’s discomfort sound like resistance to his success.
Adrian wanted to believe that version.
“I failed you.”
Elena looked at him.
“You failed to listen. That is not the same as pushing me.”
“I brought her into your life.”
“She made her own choices.”
“So did I.”
Elena nodded.
That answer mattered.
No excuses.
No blaming the engagement.
No claiming Celeste changed suddenly.
Adrian opened his laptop.
“I’m reviewing every message and event record.”
“Good.”
“I’m also creating a foundation in your name to—”
“No.”
He stopped.
Elena almost smiled.
“You still think the answer to guilt is buying something.”
“What should I do?”
“Learn to notice before I fall into a fountain.”
Adrian lowered his head.
“I will.”
Marcus entered carrying the Monroe Holdings audit.
The company owed more than four hundred million dollars.
Many loans were hidden across shell companies.
One shell company had been receiving money from the engagement trust before Adrian revoked it.
