Chapter 4 - THE FIRST TIME CELESTE INSULTED HER

The first insult happened during a wedding-planning lunch.
Elena arrived carrying a small wooden box.
Inside was the veil she had worn during a simple church ceremony before Adrian’s father left.
“I thought perhaps part of the lace could be sewn inside your dress,” she told Celeste. “Something old.”
Celeste lifted the yellowed fabric with two fingers.
“It smells like storage.”
Elena’s smile weakened.
“It is old.”
“I’m wearing custom French lace.”
Adrian was speaking to the restaurant manager across the room.
Celeste pushed the box back.
“This wedding has a particular standard.”
Elena closed the lid.
“I understand.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
Celeste looked toward Elena’s handbag, purchased from a discount store.
“People will photograph everything. Your clothes, your shoes, even what you carry.”
Elena met her eyes.
“Adrian asked me to come as his mother.”
“He asked because he feels guilty.”
“For what?”
“For becoming more sophisticated than the life you gave him.”
Elena stared at her.
Celeste smiled gently, as though offering advice.
“You should let him move forward without constantly reminding everyone where he came from.”
Adrian returned before Elena answered.
Celeste immediately became affectionate.
She praised Elena’s veil idea.
She suggested displaying it at the rehearsal dinner.
Elena said nothing.
Later, Adrian drove her home.
“You’re quiet.”
“I’m tired.”
“Do you like Celeste?”
Elena looked out the window.
“She loves the man you became.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is the only one I have tonight.”
Adrian believed she needed time to accept his engagement.
Celeste told him Elena felt threatened.
“She’s afraid marriage will change your loyalty.”
“My mother isn’t like that.”
“Every mother struggles when another woman becomes important.”
The explanation sounded reasonable.
It also protected Celeste from accountability.
Over the following months, Elena received incorrect event times.
Her name disappeared from planning meetings.
Her seat moved farther from Adrian at every dinner.
When she told her son, Celeste always had an explanation.
Assistant error.
Venue limitation.
Security issue.
Adrian promised to fix each problem.
Then work pulled him away.
Celeste learned a dangerous lesson.
Adrian would protect his mother emotionally.

But he rarely investigated small humiliations before moving to the next crisis.
👉 Celeste kept each insult small enough to explain until the engagement party gave her an audience large enough to make Elena disappear publicly.
