Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE FOUNTAIN
Elena Ruiz hit the cold marble water with both hands.
The impact stole her breath.
Water soaked through her faded blue dress as silver hair fell across her face. Around the engagement garden, two hundred guests in tuxedos and designer gowns stood frozen beneath strings of white lights.
At the edge of the fountain, Celeste Monroe lowered the hand she had used to shove her.
“Your cheap clothes ruin my aesthetic.”
A few of Celeste’s friends laughed.
Most guests looked away.
Elena remained seated in the water, one hand gripping the fountain ledge while the other covered the small tear in her dress.
Then the music stopped.
Adrian Ruiz stood on the balcony above them.
He wore a black tuxedo, but the expression on his face belonged to the boy who once fought older children for mocking his mother’s worn shoes.
He walked down the staircase without shouting.
Celeste smiled when he approached.
“Adrian, your mother caused a scene.”
He passed her.
He stepped into the fountain, removed his jacket, and wrapped it around Elena’s trembling shoulders.
“Mom,” he said softly. “Did you slip?”
Elena looked at Celeste.
Then she looked at her son.
“No.”
One word silenced the garden.
Adrian helped her sit against the fountain wall. Then he opened his phone and typed a message to his chief counsel.
LIQUIDATE THE ENGAGEMENT TRUST. REVOKE CELESTE’S INTEREST. BEGIN FULL AUDIT OF MONROE HOLDINGS.
A black sedan waited beyond the gates.
Inside, attorney Marcus Bell opened the secure portal.
The ten-million-dollar engagement trust appeared on his screen.
So did Adrian’s emergency financing commitment to Monroe Holdings.
Marcus pressed CONFIRM.
IT’S DONE.
Celeste’s clutch began vibrating.
She leaned toward Adrian.
“Tell everyone it was an accident.”
Adrian continued supporting his mother with one arm.
“Check your trust.”
Celeste opened her phone.
ENGAGEMENT BENEFICIARY STATUS: REVOKED.
EMERGENCY CREDIT FACILITY: SUSPENDED.
FORENSIC AUDIT NOTICE ISSUED.
Her face went white.
Then Marcus sent another message.
WE FOUND PAYMENTS MADE UNDER ELENA RUIZ’S NAME.
Adrian slowly turned toward Celeste.
