Chapter 3 - THE MONROE NAME

Celeste had been born into wealth.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Monroe Holdings owned luxury hotels, private residences, and high-end event properties across the East Coast.

Celeste’s father, Charles Monroe, appeared on magazine covers beside buildings carrying his family name.

He spoke about legacy.

Discipline.

Generational excellence.

Adrian admired him at first.

Charles treated him like an equal rather than a young entrepreneur who had escaped poverty.

He invited Adrian to private dinners.

He introduced him to international investors.

Then Monroe Holdings began showing signs of strain.

One hotel project stalled.

A lender demanded additional collateral.

Several properties carried more debt than their public valuations suggested.

Charles described the problems as temporary.

“We are asset rich and cash constrained,” he told Adrian.

Adrian understood temporary pressure.

Ruiz Global had survived difficult years too.

He agreed to provide a short-term credit facility, but only after a full financial review.

Celeste asked him not to embarrass her father.

“My family name has survived for a hundred years.”

“Then an audit should not frighten anyone.”

“It looks like you don’t trust us.”

“Trust and verification are not enemies.”

Celeste kissed him and changed the subject.

A week later, she proposed an engagement trust.

The ten-million-dollar account would fund their future home, wedding expenses, and philanthropic work.

Adrian agreed on one condition.

The trust remained revocable until marriage.

Celeste laughed.

“You think I’m going to run away?”

“No. My attorney thinks every agreement should have clear terms.”

Marcus Bell drafted the documents.

Celeste received beneficiary access but no independent withdrawal authority.

Monroe Holdings received a separate emergency credit commitment.

That facility also required accurate disclosure.

Charles signed.

Celeste signed as witness.

Neither told Adrian that Monroe Holdings was days away from defaulting on a hidden loan.

Nor did they tell him that Elena’s name appeared inside a property company connected to that debt.

The company was called Elena Ruiz Community Housing LLC.

It sounded charitable.

It owned no affordable housing.

Instead, it held three luxury properties and fourteen million dollars in loans.
