Chapter 17 - THE COMPANY ADRIAN REFUSED TO BUY

Monroe Holdings entered bankruptcy protection.

Its debt exceeded six hundred million dollars.

Hotels faced closure.

Construction workers worried about unpaid wages.

Several banks expected Adrian to purchase the company.

After all, saving Monroe Holdings would protect his reputation and recover some money lost through fraud.

Adrian refused.

“I will not reward a structure built on false valuations.”

Marcus agreed.

But Elena asked a different question.

“What happens to the employees?”

“Some properties will be sold.”

“To whom?”

“Private investors.”

“Will they keep the workers?”

“No guarantee.”

Elena did not ask Adrian to buy the Monroe empire.

She asked him to support employee-led bids for healthy properties.

Ruiz Global provided transparent financing to independent cooperatives and experienced operators.

No Monroe family member retained control.

No engagement trust was restored.

No hidden guarantees existed.

Several hotels survived under new ownership.

Employees received shares.

Unprofitable luxury projects were sold or closed through court supervision.

Charles’s private estate was auctioned.

Celeste’s jewelry, cars, and designer collection funded restitution.

The red engagement gown sold for less than expected.

The fountain estate was one of the final properties listed.

Adrian wanted nothing to do with it.

Elena visited once.

The white flowers were gone.

The marble fountain stood empty.

“You don’t have to be here,” Adrian said.

“I know.”

She walked to the edge.

A faint crack remained where her hand struck the stone.

Adrian looked at it.

“I still see you in the water.”

“So do I.”

“I should have known what she was doing before that.”

“Yes.”

He accepted the answer.

Elena touched the dry marble.

“What will happen to this place?”

“A developer wants to divide it into luxury rentals.”

She looked at the enormous house.

Its ballrooms and guest wings had been designed to display wealth.

“What does the neighborhood need?”

“Family transitional housing. Legal services. Job training.”

Elena nodded.

“Then perhaps the building can finally become useful.”

Adrian purchased the estate through an independent nonprofit at market value.

Not as a gift to Elena.

As restitution connected to the fraud.

The fountain was not removed.

Elena had another plan for it.

👉 The place where Celeste tried to humiliate poverty would become a center for families rebuilding after financial displacement.
