Chapter 6 - The Facility Without Windows
Grant admitted Lily to Willow Crest Behavioral Center under an emergency psychiatric hold.
The facility belonged to Vale Meridian Health.
Dr. Pierce signed the order.
Grant submitted a statement claiming Lily threatened suicide and attempted to attack Vivian with a kitchen knife.
No knife existed.
No independent witness was interviewed.
At Willow Crest, nurses removed Lily’s phone, jewelry, and clothes.
They gave her a hospital gown and placed her in a room without windows.
Whenever she denied being suicidal, staff wrote that she lacked insight.
Whenever she asked for Helen, they documented fixation on an “enabling relative.”
Grant visited with Vivian and spoke to Lily through a glass partition.
“You can come home when you cooperate.”
“Home?”
Lily laughed weakly.
“You mean the place you imprisoned me before bringing me here?”
Grant’s face remained calm.
“Sign the treatment consent.”
The document authorized electroconvulsive therapy if Dr. Pierce considered it necessary.
Another page granted Grant temporary control over Lily’s financial and legal decisions.
She pushed the papers back.
“No.”
Vivian leaned toward the glass.
“Your mother cannot help you. She has no money, no influence, and no one who will believe her over physicians.”
What Vivian did not know was that Helen had already contacted Chief of Medicine Aaron Wells at St. Catherine Medical Center.
Years earlier, Helen’s late husband had worked as an insurance fraud investigator.
Helen often helped him organize medical claims at their kitchen table before she opened the bakery.
She understood dates, authorization codes, altered records, and the importance of preserving original documents.
After his death, she chose a quieter life.
Grant mistook quietness for ignorance.
Helen sent Dr. Wells Lily’s legitimate medical history, including twenty-eight years without psychiatric hospitalization or substance misuse.
Dr. Wells could not intervene in another facility without examining Lily.
But he advised Helen to bring Lily directly to St. Catherine if she escaped.
The domestic violence advocate arranged a forensic nurse.
Helen drove to Willow Crest with a court clerk’s emergency request for patient contact.
The facility denied her entry.
Then Lily appeared briefly at a second-floor service door while an orderly moved laundry carts.
