Chapter 18 - The Verdict
The jury deliberated for four days.
Grant was convicted of healthcare fraud, conspiracy, falsifying medical records, unlawful imprisonment, poisoning, financial crimes, and charges connected to Olivia’s death.
Vivian was convicted of leading the conspiracy, bribery, patient exploitation, and participating in the abuse of Richard, Olivia, Lily, and others.
Dr. Pierce received a reduced sentence for cooperation, but the judge emphasized that medical authority made his betrayal especially severe.
“You turned diagnosis into a weapon,” she told him.
Grant stood before sentencing.
He apologized to Vale Meridian employees.
He apologized to shareholders.
He apologized for harming the company’s reputation.
He did not mention Lily until the judge asked him directly.
“I loved my wife,” he said.
Lily watched from the front row.
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Love does not drug a person into confusion and then use that confusion as evidence.”
Grant received a sentence that ensured he would spend decades in prison.
Vivian received an equally severe sentence.
The court ordered the seizure of assets obtained through fraudulent transfers.
Those funds were placed into restitution programs for former patients.
Richard’s shares were restored.
He transferred them into an independent trust requiring patient representatives and outside ethics oversight.
Lily’s divorce became final shortly afterward.
Grant received no settlement.
The prenuptial agreement he had designed to protect his wealth also prevented him from claiming anything connected to Lily’s future work.
Dr. Wells cleared Lily medically.
Yet Lily did not feel instantly free.
Justice did not erase the nights she feared sleep.
It did not remove every moment of self-doubt.
Healing came in smaller victories.
Taking medication without panic.
Entering a hospital without shaking.
Sleeping with her phone beside her.
Choosing her own clothes after months of hospital gowns.
One morning, she returned to Morning Grace before sunrise.
Helen was rolling dough.
Without speaking, Lily tied on an apron.
They worked side by side until the first customers arrived.
