Chapter 10 - Olivia’s Name
Olivia Vale died seven years before Grant married Lily.
The public story was simple.
She struggled with addiction.
She became unstable.
One night, she mixed medication with alcohol and fell from an upstairs balcony.
Grant rarely spoke about her.
Vivian described the marriage as a tragedy her son had survived.
Detective Ruiz obtained Olivia’s archived medical file.
Dr. Pierce had diagnosed her with bipolar disorder, paranoia, and drug misuse.
His language was almost identical to Lily’s reports.
Olivia’s chart also contained repeated references to unexplained bruising.
Warfarin appeared in a medication list for three weeks, then disappeared without explanation.
Olivia had no medical reason to take it.
Two months before her death, she told an emergency nurse that Grant controlled her medication.
The nurse documented the statement.
The note was later amended to say Olivia was confused about her prescriptions.
The user account that altered it belonged to a Vale Meridian administrator.
Ruiz located Olivia’s younger sister, Rachel.
Rachel had not spoken to Grant’s family since the funeral.
She told investigators Olivia tried to leave twice.
Each time, Grant used psychiatric records to have her returned.
“Everyone believed him,” Rachel said. “He was calm. Olivia was terrified. Fear made her look unstable.”
Before Olivia died, she mailed Rachel a letter.
Rachel had kept it hidden for years.
Grant says if I tell anyone about the files, he will prove I’m insane. His mother says they did the same thing to his father when he tried to stop the company.
That final sentence changed the investigation.
Grant’s father, Richard Vale, supposedly retired after developing early dementia.
Vivian took control of Vale Meridian.
Richard died in a private care facility eighteen months later.
His diagnosis had also been signed by Dr. Pierce.
The pattern did not begin with Olivia.
It began inside Grant’s own family.
When Lily learned about Olivia, she covered her face.
“I found her name in his office. That’s why he moved me to Willow Crest.”
“What exactly did you find?” Ruiz asked.
“A ledger.”
Grant had kept a list of patient names, properties, settlements, and guardianship transfers.
Lily photographed several pages before he caught her.
The photographs remained hidden in a place Grant would never think to search.
