Chapter 5 - The Widow Who Delivered Cakes
Helen owned a small bakery called Morning Grace.
Grant considered it a harmless business.
That was why he did not object when Helen offered to provide desserts for a Vale Meridian charity dinner.
Vivian loved the idea of appearing generous to Lily’s working-class mother.
For three days, Helen moved in and out of the mansion carrying cake boxes, trays, and ingredient bags.
No one searched them.
Inside one empty flour container, Helen hid a prepaid phone.
She left it beneath the towels in Lily’s bathroom.
Inside another delivery box was a written safety plan from the domestic violence advocate.
Lily found both.
She used the phone only when Grant slept.
Through short coded messages, she told Helen about the pills, the forged chart, and the petition for involuntary commitment.
She also revealed what she had found in Grant’s office.
Vale Meridian had paid Dr. Pierce hundreds of thousands of dollars through consulting agreements.
Several payments were linked to women who had challenged powerful family members.
Each woman was later diagnosed with severe mental illness.
Some lost access to their children.
Others signed financial settlements while hospitalized.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Olivia Vale.
Grant’s first wife.
Helen knew Grant had been married before.
Vivian said Olivia died after years of addiction.
Grant claimed he never discussed her because the memories were too painful.
Lily found records showing that Dr. Pierce treated Olivia shortly before her death.
Her diagnosis matched Lily’s almost word for word.
So did the description of her alleged violent episodes.
Helen told Lily not to confront Grant.
They arranged an escape for the following Monday, when he was scheduled to travel.
But on Sunday night, Grant found the prepaid phone.
He did not shout.
He placed it on the dining table and asked Lily to sit down.
Vivian stood behind him.
“Your mother is feeding your paranoia,” Grant said.
“She’s trying to help me.”
“From what?”
“You.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
He handed Lily two pills.
“Take them.”
“No.”
He signaled toward the security guard near the door.
Lily understood that the plan had changed.
Grant had discovered she was preparing to leave.
