Chapter 11 - The Box Beneath the Bakery
Months earlier, Lily had visited Morning Grace while Grant attended a business meeting.
She carried a white cake box when she arrived.
Helen assumed it contained something for a charity event.
Inside were printed photographs of Grant’s ledger.
Lily did not explain everything.
She only said, “Keep this where no one connected to Grant can find it.”
Helen sealed the box inside a dry-storage cabinet beneath old baking pans.
Grant searched Lily’s purse, phone, and cloud accounts.
He never searched the bakery.
To him, Morning Grace was beneath notice.
Detective Ruiz opened the box in Helen’s upstairs apartment.
The ledger contained thirty-one names.
Beside each were medical diagnoses, estimated assets, family contacts, and the final destination of money or property.
Several people were patients at Vale Meridian facilities.
Others were spouses or parents of company executives.
Olivia’s name appeared beside a life insurance payment and the transfer of her voting shares to Grant.
Richard Vale’s name appeared beside controlling shares moved to Vivian.
Lily’s name was near the bottom.
Projected outcome:
Long-term psychiatric placement.
Confidential divorce settlement.
Non-disclosure agreement.
Transfer of charitable voting proxy.
Lily served on the independent ethics foundation that reviewed Vale Meridian facilities.
Her voting proxy could block acquisitions and trigger external audits.
Grant needed it.
When Lily began investigating patient complaints, he decided to remove her credibility and seize her vote.
The ledger also revealed a planned acquisition of six nursing homes.
Those facilities held properties worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Grant and Vivian intended to use false incompetency findings to force several elderly minority owners to sell.
Lily’s signature was required to certify that the transaction met the company’s ethical standards.
She had refused.
That was when her “mental decline” accelerated.
Helen stared at the pages.
“My daughter almost died because she wouldn’t sign this?”
Ruiz nodded.
“Your daughter stood between them and a very profitable deal.”
Helen looked toward the ovens below.
Vivian had called her a widow who sold cakes.
But the small bakery had preserved the document that could collapse the Vale empire.
Ruiz photographed every page.
Then she noticed the final column.
Some entries were marked CLOSED.
Others read ACTIVE.
Lily’s name was active.
