Chapter 13 - The Message From the Balcony
Vivian’s assistant, Laura Chen, had worked for the Vale family for eleven years.
She scheduled appointments, organized settlements, and deleted emails when ordered.
For years, she told herself she was only handling paperwork.
Olivia’s death changed that.
The night Olivia fell, Laura received a message from Grant.
Pierce gave her too much. She can barely stand.
Twenty-three minutes later, Vivian wrote:
Keep staff away from the west wing. We need her alone when the ambulance comes.
Laura had saved screenshots on a personal drive.
She feared the messages but feared Vivian more.
After seeing Helen carry Lily into the emergency room, Laura decided silence had become participation.
She gave investigators the drive.
Other messages showed Grant and Vivian discussing Olivia’s refusal to sign over her voting shares.
Grant wrote:
If she survives tonight, Pierce will certify permanent placement tomorrow.
Olivia’s fall had been ruled accidental.
The new evidence suggested she was heavily drugged, isolated, and left near an unsecured balcony after refusing financial documents.
Whether Grant physically pushed her remained unclear.
But he knew she could barely stand.
He deliberately kept staff away.
The district attorney reopened Olivia’s death investigation.
Laura also revealed Dr. Pierce’s location.
He was hiding inside a private guesthouse owned by a Vale Meridian board member.
Police arrested him before dawn.
Inside his luggage were cash, passports, prescription pads, and a laptop containing altered patient files.
Pierce requested an attorney.
Then he learned Grant had blamed everything on him.
The doctor began cooperating.
He admitted falsifying Lily’s diagnosis.
He admitted ordering warfarin to create visible bruising.
He admitted writing reports for Vivian for more than a decade.
But he insisted the Vale family controlled the operation.
“Grant chose the targets,” Pierce said. “Vivian taught him how.”
He described Richard Vale’s removal from the company.
Richard discovered that Vivian was using psychiatric facilities to force property transfers.
Before he could report her, Pierce diagnosed him with dementia.
Grant was twenty-six at the time.
He knew the diagnosis was false.
Instead of protecting his father, he accepted the shares Vivian transferred to him.
Grant’s wealth had been built on the first person they silenced.
