Chapter 1 - The Test He Couldn’t Stop

“Please don’t send me back.”

Lily’s whisper barely reached her mother’s ear.

Helen tightened both arms around her daughter as doctors rushed toward them beneath the cold white lights of the emergency hallway.

Lily’s dress was filthy.

Her hair hung in tangled strands around a face covered with bruises. Her lips were pale, and her body felt frighteningly light against Helen’s chest.

“No one is taking you anywhere,” Helen said.

The automatic doors opened behind them.

Grant Vale entered in an expensive black coat, his expression calm enough to fool anyone who did not know him.

His mother, Vivian, followed with a silk handkerchief pressed beneath dry eyes.

Grant stepped between Lily and the treatment room.

“No blood test.”

The doctor carrying the collection tray stopped.

“This patient requires immediate evaluation.”

“She has a documented psychiatric condition,” Grant said. “Blood draws trigger violent episodes.”

Lily began shaking.

Helen moved backward, keeping her body between Grant and her daughter.

Vivian leaned close enough for Helen to smell her perfume.

“No one will believe her,” she whispered. “You’re a widow who sells cakes. Don’t embarrass yourself.”

Helen looked down at Lily’s wrist.

A hospital bracelet from another facility had been pulled almost completely off. Beneath it was a small puncture mark surrounded by yellow bruising.

Inside Helen’s coat pocket rested a sealed blood tube bearing Lily’s name, the collection time, and a forensic chain-of-custody label.

Grant did not know it existed.

At the end of the hallway, Chief of Medicine Dr. Aaron Wells emerged holding a tablet.

A preliminary toxicology alert flashed across the screen.

He looked from the result to Grant, who was still blocking the medical team.

“Step away from the patient.”

Grant’s smile disappeared.

Two nurses moved beside Dr. Wells and electronically locked Lily’s chart against unauthorized changes.

Helen slowly removed the sealed sample from her pocket.

She allowed Grant to see it for one second.

Vivian’s face went white.

“You should’ve let them test her,” Helen said.

Grant stared at the tube.

He had spent months controlling Lily’s doctors, prescriptions, and medical records.

But the evidence he needed destroyed was already outside his control.

👉 Grant tried to seize the sealed sample, but Dr. Wells had already seen enough to call hospital security.
