Chapter 14 - Grant’s Last Offer
Grant knew the investigation was closing around him.
Through his attorney, he requested a private meeting with Lily.
Dr. Wells opposed it.
Helen wanted to refuse.
Lily agreed under strict conditions.
The meeting took place in a secure hospital conference room with attorneys and Detective Ruiz present.
Grant entered without his usual coat.
He looked tired, but his voice remained controlled.
“Lily, this has gone too far.”
She stared at him.
“You poisoned me.”
“Pierce mishandled your medication.”
“You ordered him to make the bruises worse.”
“That message has been misunderstood.”
“You falsified my records.”
“I was trying to protect you during a breakdown.”
Lily placed Olivia’s letter on the table.
“Did you protect her too?”
For the first time, Grant’s expression cracked.
He looked toward his attorney.
Then he leaned closer to Lily.
“You don’t understand the company. Thousands of employees depend on it.”
“People you imprisoned built that company for you.”
“If Vale Meridian collapses, patients lose care. Families lose jobs.”
“That does not make your crimes necessary.”
Grant slid a folder across the table.
Inside was a settlement offer.
Lily would receive twenty-five million dollars.
Helen’s bakery would receive a charitable grant.
In exchange, Lily would withdraw her accusations, confirm she had voluntarily taken the medications, and sign over her ethics-foundation proxy.
Helen’s name appeared in the agreement.
Grant had assigned a price even to her silence.
Lily closed the folder.
“You still think everything can be purchased.”
“I think your mother deserves security.”
Helen spoke from the corner.
“My daughter’s life is not for sale.”
Grant looked at her.
“You could lose that bakery fighting us.”
Helen almost smiled.
“You still don’t understand what you’re fighting.”
Morning Grace was modest, but Helen owned the building free and clear.
She had no debt.
No investors.
No board Grant could threaten.
For the first time, his wealth gave him no leverage.
Lily pushed the settlement back.
“You taught everyone that my fear was illness.”
She stood slowly.
“Now you’re going to learn that my voice is evidence.”
Grant left without a deal.
