Chapter 9 - THE FIRST DAUGHTER WHO SPOKE
Lena Shaw agreed to meet in person.
She was forty-two, reserved and visibly uncomfortable inside Daniel’s conference room.
She carried a plastic storage box.
“My father was not perfect,” she began. “But he was not confused until Vivian started controlling his medication.”
The pattern was nearly identical.
Vivian isolated Thomas from friends.
Changed household staff.
Took over his appointments.
Encouraged him to drink wine with pills that made him unstable.
Then she filmed his weakest moments.
She showed the footage to attorneys and doctors as proof he needed her protection.
Thomas signed property transfers while sedated.
When he tried to reverse them, he fell from the balcony.
Lena never believed it was accidental.
But she was twenty-four, financially dependent and terrified.
Vivian’s attorney threatened to accuse her of stealing from Thomas’s company.
Lena accepted a settlement and signed a confidentiality agreement.
“I have hated myself ever since.”
Isabella shook her head.
“You survived her.”
“So did you.”
“Not alone.”
Lena opened the storage box.
Inside were photographs of Thomas’s bruises, pharmacy statements and a copy of a toxicology report that had never entered the official file.
The report showed sedative levels nearly identical to Richard’s.
There was also a cassette recording made by Thomas.
He accused Vivian of drugging him and pressuring him to sign.
The recording ended three days before his death.
The confidentiality agreement could not legally conceal evidence of a crime.
Lena agreed to give everything to police.
Detectives reopened Thomas’s case.
Vivian’s financial history revealed that she received millions from his estate.
Most of that money disappeared through companies later controlled by Marcus.
Marcus had not spent his adult life merely depending on Richard.
He and Vivian had been operating together before she entered the Vale family.
Their plan had always been to gain access to another estate.
The mansion was only one piece.
Vale Preservation Group controlled historic hotels, apartment buildings and land worth hundreds of millions.
Marcus had already pledged two company properties as collateral for secret loans.
The money funded failed developments and his luxury lifestyle.
If the trust froze those assets, lenders would discover the fraud.
Marcus became desperate.
He violated the protection order and entered Richard’s hospital room disguised as a medical technician.
Security caught him near the elevator.
Inside his bag were blank resignation forms and Richard’s stolen company seal.
He had come to obtain another signature.
But he also carried the missing memory card.
When detectives opened it, they found more than footage of Vivian forcing Richard to sign.
