Chapter 2 - THE CALL THAT BROUGHT HER HOME

Three days earlier, Isabella had been working late in her Boston office when an unfamiliar number appeared on her phone.
The caller said nothing.
She heard only breathing.
Then a man’s weak voice whispered, “Blue room. Behind the painting.”
The call ended.
Isabella recognized her father immediately.
She called back.
The number was disconnected.
She tried Richard’s personal phone, the mansion and his company office. Every call went to voicemail.
Then Vivian answered from Richard’s number.
“Your father is resting.”
“Why did he call me from another phone?”
“He didn’t.”
“I heard his voice.”
Vivian sighed.
“Richard has been confused since his fall.”
“What fall?”
A pause followed.
Then Vivian explained that Richard had slipped on the stairs and fractured his wrist. She claimed doctors were evaluating him for cognitive decline.
No one had told Isabella.
“Your father didn’t want to worry you,” Vivian said.
Isabella almost believed her.
Richard had spent years pretending their family was less broken than it was.
But after the call, Isabella received an encrypted email from Daniel Mercer, the attorney who had managed her late mother’s estate.
The subject contained only two words:
COME HOME.
Attached were pharmacy invoices, a photograph of Richard asleep at his desk and a scanned page from a deed transferring the mansion to Vivian.
Daniel wrote that Richard’s signature looked wrong.
He also explained that Vivian had blocked him from meeting Richard privately.
Isabella booked the first flight to Virginia.
During the journey, she studied the documents.
Richard’s accident had occurred six weeks earlier.
Since then, Vivian had dismissed the housekeeper, replaced the family doctor and removed Richard from the board of Vale Preservation Group, the company controlling his real estate and historic properties.
Marcus had become acting president.
The deed transferring the mansion was dated four days after Richard’s injury.
According to the witness statement, Richard had signed it at breakfast.
Yet a medical report showed he had been sedated and hospitalized that morning.
Daniel met Isabella outside the airport.
He looked older than she remembered.
“Your father asked me to contact you months ago,” he said.
“Why didn’t you?”
“He changed his mind every time Vivian entered the room.”
Isabella looked at him.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Daniel handed her the original leather folder.
“Your mother’s trust activates when Richard is incapacitated or coerced.”
“Who becomes trustee?”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
Then he said, “You do.”
Isabella stared at him.
Vivian believed Isabella was returning as an estranged daughter with no authority.
She had no idea Isabella was arriving as the legal successor controlling every protected Vale asset.
But there was one problem.

Before Isabella could exercise that power, she had to prove her father had not willingly given everything away.
👉 Isabella carried the authority to freeze the estate, but Vivian had already created months of medical records claiming Richard could no longer recognize the truth.
