Chapter 7 - THE WITNESS THEY TRIED TO SILENCE
Isabella called the police in Maryland.
Officers reached Rosa’s sister’s home within minutes.
The vehicle outside belonged to a private security company recently hired by Marcus.
Two men claimed they had come to deliver legal papers.
Neither carried documents.
Both had photographs of Rosa on their phones.
Police detained them for questioning.
Rosa and her sister were moved to a protected location.
When Isabella arrived the next morning, Rosa looked exhausted.
She held a worn handbag against her chest.
“I am sorry I left him.”
“You were threatened.”
“I should have gone to police.”
“You’re here now.”
Rosa explained how Vivian’s control had grown.
First, she dismissed staff members loyal to Richard.
Then she replaced his doctor with one recommended by Marcus.
She installed new locks.
She began telling visitors Richard was too tired to meet them.
Marcus took control of Richard’s email and company phone.
Whenever Richard resisted, Vivian increased the medication.
Rosa secretly reduced the doses when she could.
That was why Richard had brief periods of clarity.
During one of those periods, he hid the recorder behind Catherine’s portrait.
Vivian discovered Rosa helping him.
She threatened to report Rosa’s son, an undocumented college student, to immigration authorities using false accusations of theft.
Rosa fled.
Before leaving, she copied the security footage onto a memory card and mailed it to Catherine’s former nurse.
The nurse had died the previous month.
Her unopened mail had been returned to the mansion.
Vivian or Marcus now possessed the card.
But Rosa had kept one piece of evidence.
She opened her handbag and removed a small digital kitchen scale.
Traces of crushed medication remained beneath the platform.
Marcus’s fingerprint was on the battery cover.
Rosa also had an audio recording.
Vivian’s voice was clear.
“He doesn’t need to understand the papers. He only needs to hold the pen.”
Marcus answered, “What about Isabella?”
“She won’t come. She has spent years proving she can live without him.”
Isabella listened twice.
Vivian had weaponized the distance she created.
Rosa then revealed one more detail.
The night Richard fell, he had confronted Vivian about a bank vault.
He told her Catherine had preserved proof concerning Vivian’s first husband.
Vivian struck him.
Marcus grabbed his arm.
Richard fell against the fireplace.
They moved him to the staircase and called an ambulance hours later.
“What was in the vault?” Isabella asked.
Rosa shook her head.
“I only heard Mrs. Vale say, ‘If Catherine kept that report, everything belongs to the girl.’”
Isabella looked at the brass key.
The vault did not merely contain old estate records.
