Chapter 4 - THE FALL THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT
Vivian told everyone Richard had fallen while walking down the marble staircase.
The household incident report described wet shoes and poor balance.
No one had seen it happen.
Marcus claimed he found Richard at the bottom.
But the mansion’s security system told another story.
Most interior recordings from that night had been deleted.
Daniel’s technician recovered fragments from an automatic cloud backup Vivian did not know existed.
At 10:16 p.m., Richard entered the blue room carrying a small envelope.
At 10:23, Marcus followed him.
At 10:41, Vivian entered with a glass of water.
At 11:08, the camera outside the room recorded a loud crash.
Richard did not fall on the staircase.
He fell inside the blue room.
The next usable frame showed Marcus and Vivian dragging him toward the landing.
They had moved him after he was unconscious.
The recovered footage did not show what caused the fall.
But Richard’s hospital bloodwork revealed a sedative not prescribed by his doctor.
A pharmacy receipt showed Vivian had purchased the same medication under another patient’s name.
Isabella wanted police to enter the mansion immediately.
Daniel warned her that the evidence was incomplete.
Vivian had already told doctors Richard secretly took sleeping pills.
Marcus claimed his stepfather became aggressive when confused.
Their attorneys were preparing to argue that the family had moved Richard only to help him.
“We need Richard’s testimony,” Daniel said.
“What if he can’t give it?”
“Then we need the original trust documents and whatever Catherine placed in the blue room.”
Isabella studied the recovered video.
Marcus’s wrist was bare when he entered the room.
He wore Richard’s gold watch when he came out.
The watch was more than jewelry.
Catherine had commissioned it after Richard’s first major restoration project. The back contained the Vale family crest and a personal engraving.
Richard never removed it.
If Marcus had taken the watch while Richard lay unconscious, it established theft and contradicted his claim that Richard had willingly handed over personal property.
Isabella enlarged another frame.
Vivian held the envelope Richard had hidden.
She had found it.
But she did not open it on camera.
Instead, she handed it to Marcus.
“Where is it now?” Isabella asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“We don’t know.”
They entered the mansion shortly afterward with an officer waiting nearby.
Vivian expected an emotional confrontation.
She did not expect Isabella to arrive with recovered footage and an emergency petition.
That was how Isabella found her father crawling toward the broken cup.
And that was why Marcus’s stolen watch mattered.
But when police searched Marcus, the envelope was not on him.
Vivian smiled as though she had already won.
“You came too late.”
