Chapter 8 - VAULT 17
Vault 17 was located beneath the oldest branch of Commonwealth Trust Bank.
Daniel accompanied Isabella.
Two bank officers examined the brass key, Catherine’s trust seal and Isabella’s identification.
The vault had not been opened in eighteen years.
According to the access instructions, only three people could enter.
Catherine.
Richard.
Or Isabella after her thirtieth birthday.
Vivian had no authority.
Neither did Marcus.
Inside the box were company records, letters and a thick investigative report dated six months before Catherine’s death.
The report concerned Vivian Shaw.
Before marrying Richard, Vivian had been married to a developer named Thomas Shaw.
Thomas died after signing over control of several properties to Vivian.
His death was ruled accidental.
He had fallen from a balcony while taking medication that caused dizziness.
The same medication found in Richard’s blood.
Catherine had hired an investigator after Vivian began attending Vale charity events while Thomas was still alive.
Catherine suspected Vivian was positioning herself near wealthy widowers and vulnerable business owners.
The investigator found altered medical documents, disputed property signatures and payments to a private physician.
But Catherine became too sick to continue.
She sealed the report and warned Richard in a letter.
If Vivian Shaw enters your life after I am gone, do not mistake attention for love.
Richard had never opened the vault.
Daniel found proof that the bank mailed him annual reminders.
Every notice had been signed for by Vivian.
She had intercepted them.
The box also contained the original Vale Legacy Trust.
Its most important clause had never appeared in the copies Marcus’s attorneys used.
If any spouse or outside beneficiary obtained property through fraud, coercion or medically induced incapacity, all affected assets would transfer into permanent trust control.
The acting spouse would lose every benefit.
The successor trustee would become controlling guardian of the estate.
That successor was Isabella.
Vivian had spent years trying to force Richard to sign away assets that could never legally become hers if coercion was proven.
The report connected her methods to her first husband.
But it did not prove she caused his death.
Isabella wanted justice for Richard, not speculation.
Daniel contacted the detective who had investigated Thomas Shaw’s fall.
The man was retired, but he remembered Vivian.
“She cried beautifully,” he said.
He also remembered that Thomas’s daughter had challenged the property transfer.
The daughter disappeared from the case after receiving a settlement.
Her name was Lena Shaw.
Daniel found her in Oregon.
When Isabella called, Lena remained silent for a long time.
Then she asked, “Has Vivian started making your father crawl yet?”
The question froze Isabella.
Vivian had humiliated Thomas in the same way.
Lena had witnessed it.
