Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY VIVIAN REPLACED
Isabella had been fourteen when her mother, Catherine, died.
Before cancer weakened her, Catherine Vale had been the emotional center of the family.
Richard built hotels and restored historic buildings.
Catherine protected the people living inside their home.
She remembered birthdays.
She knew every employee’s children.
She made Richard leave the office for dinner even when millions of dollars depended on another meeting.
After her death, the mansion became silent.
Richard buried himself in work.
Isabella learned not to ask for help because every request seemed to remind him of Catherine.
Vivian entered their lives two years later.
She was elegant, attentive and endlessly patient with Richard’s grief.
She brought food to the house.
Organized charity events.
Helped Isabella choose a graduation dress.
At first, Isabella wanted to love her.
Then Vivian’s son arrived.
Marcus was six years older than Isabella and had already failed out of two universities.
Vivian described him as misunderstood.
Richard gave him a position at Vale Preservation Group.
Within months, Marcus had a company car, a salary and an office larger than employees who had worked there for decades.
Whenever Isabella questioned it, Vivian called her jealous.
Richard asked her to be kind.
“You already have your future,” he said. “Marcus needs a chance.”
That sentence became the rule of the household.
Marcus needed opportunities.
Vivian needed respect.
Richard needed peace.
Isabella was expected to need nothing.
When Marcus wrecked a company vehicle, Richard covered the cost.
When he lost money on a development proposal, the company absorbed it.
When Isabella received a scholarship to study architecture in Boston, Vivian told Richard the city would help his daughter become independent.
Isabella later realized Vivian had wanted her gone.
The distance grew slowly.
Calls became shorter.
Invitations arrived after events had happened.
Richard missed Isabella’s graduate exhibition because Vivian claimed he had pneumonia.
Months later, Isabella learned he had attended a gala with Marcus that same night.
She confronted him.
Richard apologized but refused to challenge Vivian’s version.
Isabella stopped coming home.
Six years passed.
She built a career reviewing the financial and legal structures behind historic-property investments. She became skilled at recognizing hidden ownership, manipulated trusts and fraudulent transfers.
Vivian believed distance had made Isabella weak.
In reality, distance had taught her how powerful people stole without ever raising their voices.
Daniel explained that Richard had recently tried to contact Isabella several times.
Each call had ended before connecting.
Phone records showed his outgoing calls were being redirected through an account controlled by Marcus.
Someone had systematically prevented father and daughter from speaking.
Then Daniel showed Isabella one more photograph.
Richard stood in the blue room beside Catherine’s portrait.
He appeared to be hiding an envelope behind the frame.
