Chapter 13 - THE PASSPORT IN THE SAFE
Police searched Vivian’s private safe.
Inside were cash, jewelry, three passports and a photograph of Richard seated against a white wall.
His eyes were half closed.
Someone held his head upright from outside the frame.
The passport used the name Robert Shaw.
It carried Richard’s face.
The planned route led through a country with weak extradition agreements.
Vivian intended to tell authorities Richard had retired abroad after voluntarily transferring his estate.
If he died there, Marcus would present the forged documents as final proof.
Daniel found emails discussing long-term care facilities under false names.
One facility accepted patients without extensive background checks.
Vivian had reserved a room.
Isabella read the message twice.
They had planned to imprison Richard permanently.
Her anger felt cleaner now.
Not wild.
Focused.
She used the trust to pay for Richard’s protection, medical rehabilitation and independent care team.
No one chosen by Vivian could enter.
Richard slowly regained strength as the sedatives left his system.
His memory improved.
So did his shame.
During physical therapy, he apologized constantly.
For missing Isabella’s graduation.
For allowing Marcus into the company.
For choosing easy explanations whenever Vivian hurt her.
Isabella finally stopped him.
“I need the truth, not a lifetime of apologies.”
“The truth is I was afraid of being alone.”
“So you let her make me alone.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
The answer wounded her.
It also allowed healing to begin.
He did not ask her to forget.
He asked what rebuilding might require.
“Time,” Isabella said. “And no more silence.”
Richard agreed.
Investigators offered Vivian a plea agreement if she identified offshore accounts and accepted responsibility.
She refused.
Marcus accepted a separate offer to testify about Thomas Shaw’s death.
He claimed Vivian had admitted replacing Thomas’s medication before his fall.
Vivian’s attorney called Marcus a desperate liar.
But bank records showed she paid the private physician who altered Thomas’s prescriptions.
The physician was still alive.
When police questioned him, he requested immunity.
He admitted helping Vivian obtain sedatives under false names.
He also admitted signing a medical statement declaring Thomas confused without examining him.
Then he revealed Vivian had contacted him again after marrying Richard.
