Chapter 1 - CRAWL FASTER, RICHARD

The broken teacup lay less than three feet from Richard Vale’s hand.

He crawled toward it anyway.

His bandaged wrist shook beneath his weight. One knee dragged across the marble floor of the mansion he had spent thirty years building.

Vivian stood over him in a red silk blouse and dark blue skirt.

The pointed heel of her shoe rested beside his injured fingers.

“Crawl faster, Richard.”

Her son, Marcus, watched from the bottom of the staircase. He wore Richard’s navy dress shirt and the gold watch Richard’s late wife had given him on their twentieth anniversary.

Neither of them heard the iron gates open.

Isabella stepped into the grand hall with a black suitcase beside her and a leather folder beneath her arm.

She had not entered her childhood home in six years.

For several seconds, she could not move.

Her father was on the floor.

His hair was uncombed. His face was pale. A white bandage wrapped his wrist. He reached for broken porcelain while his wife smiled above him.

Isabella set down the suitcase.

She did not scream.

She crossed the hall, knelt beside Richard and placed one arm around his shoulders.

“Dad, look at me.”

Richard slowly raised his head.

His eyes were cloudy, but recognition broke through.

“Bella?”

Vivian’s smile tightened.

“What a dramatic entrance.”

Isabella helped her father sit upright.

Then she looked at Vivian’s shoe.

“Take your foot off him.”

Marcus laughed.

“You disappear for six years and come back giving orders?”

Isabella opened the leather folder.

Inside were copies of the original Vale Legacy Trust, photographs from the mansion’s interior cameras, pharmacy records showing unprescribed sedatives and a property-transfer document bearing a signature that did not match Richard’s.

The first photograph showed Marcus removing Richard’s watch while Richard lay unconscious.

Marcus looked down at his wrist.

His smile vanished.

Vivian recovered quickly.

“This house is mine. Richard signed it over.”

A door opened near the study.

A police officer entered with family attorney Daniel Mercer. Another officer blocked the front exit.

Daniel carried an emergency protection order.

“The transfer is frozen.”

Marcus stepped backward.

An officer took his arm and pulled it behind him. The gold watch flashed beneath the chandelier.

Vivian began shouting that Isabella had fabricated everything.

Isabella ignored her.

She settled Richard into a chair and looked toward the security camera mounted above the staircase.

“Now play the recording.”

Daniel lifted a tablet.

The screen showed Vivian pressing a pen between Richard’s injured fingers while Marcus held him upright.

But before the video began, Richard grabbed Isabella’s sleeve.

His voice was barely audible.

“She didn’t only take the house.”

Isabella turned toward him.

“What else did she take?”

Richard looked at Marcus wearing the stolen watch.

Then he whispered the name of a person Isabella believed had been dead for eighteen years.
