Chapter 7 - The Night Labor Began
Claire’s water broke at 2:40 in the morning.
Daniel was not home.
His message said he was meeting investors at a hotel.
Maya’s investigator confirmed Sabrina was staying at the same hotel.
Claire called Emily.
The nurse arrived in eleven minutes and drove her to St. Anne’s Medical Center.
Daniel reached the hospital nearly an hour later.
He entered the labor room smelling of unfamiliar perfume.
“Why didn’t you wait for me?”
Claire gripped the bed rail through another contraction.
“Wait where?”
His expression warned her not to continue.
Emily stood near the monitor, quietly documenting times and statements.
Daniel tried to remove her.
“She’s a company employee. This is private.”
“She’s my support person,” Claire said.
The obstetric nurse confirmed that Claire had the right to choose who remained.
Daniel stepped into the hallway and made a phone call.
Through the partially open door, Emily heard him say:
“Move the board meeting to nine. I’ll have the documents by then.”
Claire’s labor became dangerous before sunrise.
Noah’s heart rate dropped.
The medical team recommended an emergency C-section.
Daniel held the consent form but did not approach Claire.
He was reading messages on his phone.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“What?”
“I’m scared.”
“The doctors know what they’re doing.”
He looked back at the screen.
Claire signed the surgical consent herself.
As nurses prepared to take her away, Daniel leaned over the bed.
“There is one more form.”
He placed the maternity authority transfer beside her.
The document gave him complete control of Haven House.
Claire stared at him.
“I’m going into surgery.”
“That’s why we need it.”
“I could lose our baby.”
“And I could lose the company if the board panics.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Remove that paper.”
Daniel glared at her.
“This is a family matter.”
Claire pushed the document away.
“No.”
His face changed.
The mask slipped.
“You are making everything harder.”
A nurse moved between them.
“We’re taking her now.”
Daniel did not kiss Claire.
He did not touch her hand.
He picked up the unsigned document and called someone before the operating-room doors closed.
Claire saw only his mouth forming one name.
Sabrina.
Inside the operating room, fear overwhelmed her.
Then she remembered the black folder hidden beneath her hospital discharge bag.
Tessa already had digital copies.
Maya already had the accounts.
Daniel could no longer erase the truth.
