Chapter 11 - The Lie About Postpartum Confusion

Daniel raised both hands.

“My wife is not well.”

Claire’s grip tightened around Noah.

Tessa entered the room.

“Move away from her bed.”

“You don’t understand,” Daniel said. “She’s confused. She has been paranoid for months.”

Tessa looked toward the charge nurse.

“Has Claire shown any signs of confusion?”

“No.”

“She just had anesthesia,” Daniel insisted.

The nurse’s expression cooled.

“She is oriented to time, place and person. Pain and exhaustion do not make her incompetent.”

Daniel held up the black folder.

“She collected random documents and created some fantasy that I’m stealing from her.”

Tessa removed a sealed copy from her briefcase.

“These are not random documents.”

Daniel stared at the duplicate folder.

He had believed the hospital copy was the only one.

Tessa continued.

“The original records are with an independent forensic accountant. The bank has preserved every transfer. The board has received the recorded call in which you told Sabrina Cole that Claire would be blamed for your unauthorized payments.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

Claire watched him calculate.

His next defense came quickly.

“Sabrina manipulated the accounts.”

“Then why did Northline pay for an apartment you entered forty-six times in six months?”

“That is not relevant.”

“It becomes relevant when foundation money paid the rent.”

Daniel turned toward Claire.

“You hired people to follow me?”

“I hired people to find missing patient money.”

His voice sharpened.

“You are destroying our family.”

Noah moved against Claire’s chest.

She lowered her face and kissed his head.

“You destroyed it when you used mothers’ medical care to finance another life.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

Sabrina.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

Then a message appeared on the screen.

You said Claire would sign. The developer is threatening to report us.

Tessa saw it.

So did the security officer.

Daniel grabbed the phone, but the officer stepped closer.

“Sir, do not delete anything.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“You have no authority to take my phone.”

“No,” Tessa said. “But the state investigator waiting downstairs does.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

He had expected a private argument with a weakened wife.

Instead, every lie he spoke created another witness.

Tessa placed the maternal incapacity clause on the table.

“Claire’s authority has not transferred to you. It has moved temporarily into an independent trust while the audit proceeds.”

Daniel frowned.

“That trust makes me acting executive.”

“No. The sealed schedule names me.”

The confidence left his face.
