Chapter 12 - Margaret’s Safeguard

Tessa opened Margaret Avery’s sealed schedule.
Daniel had never been allowed to see it because he was not a beneficiary of the Haven House trust.
The first provision blocked him from exercising Claire’s voting rights.
The second froze any property sale proposed within ninety days of a birth, medical emergency or alleged incapacity.
The third was even more severe.
Any spouse or executive who attempted to obtain authority through coercion, forged medical evidence or misuse of patient funds immediately lost all company benefits connected to the trust.
Daniel’s executive shares were canceled.
His deferred compensation was frozen for restitution.
His seat on the Haven House board was terminated pending investigation.
“You cannot do that,” he said.
“Margaret already did,” Tessa replied. “You activated the clause.”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“Then you trapped me.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You brought transfer papers into my recovery room while our son was crying.”
“I was protecting the company.”
“You were selling it.”
“One building.”
“My mother’s first building.”
“It is real estate, Claire.”
“No. It is where women go when no one else will help them.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You always cared more about strangers than our marriage.”
Claire stared at him.
There it was.
The resentment beneath every excuse.
He did not believe the missing patient visits mattered.
He did not believe Margaret House mattered.
He believed Claire’s compassion had deprived him of wealth he deserved.
Tessa’s phone rang.
Maya had completed a preliminary tracing of Northline’s accounts.
The stolen total was not two million dollars.
It exceeded seven million.
Some payments reached Sabrina.
Some financed Daniel’s personal investments.
But nearly three million dollars had moved to a Cayman Islands account held under a company named NLR Family Holdings.
Claire did not recognize the initials.
Daniel did.
His reaction lasted less than a second, but Tessa saw it.
“What is NLR?” she asked.
Daniel said nothing.
Maya sent the account registration.
The listed beneficiary was not Sabrina.
It was a twelve-year-old girl named Lily Ross.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Who is Lily?”
His silence changed the air in the room.
Sabrina had been his mistress.
May you like
But she was not the only family Daniel had hidden.
👉 The audit uncovered a secret account for a child Claire had never heard of, and Daniel’s refusal to explain it revealed that his double life began years before the theft.
